I believe a 2 year home residency condition applies so you can't move anywhere and you have some travel restrictions (outside of US) while your application is pending. This is what I heard so don't take my word for it.

[Timeline]

10/13/2012 -> N-400 filed

10/19/2012 -> Check cashed

10/22/2012 -> NOA #1 letter received

10/25/2012 -> NOA #2 letter received

11/15/2012 -> Biometrics appointment

11/19/2012 -> Placed in line for interview

01/03/2013 -> Interview letter

02/12/2013 -> Interview passed

02/12/2013 -> Oath ceremony

Here is a short story of two of my fellow co-workers, how they got to work and live in the US:

Both came to the US on a student visa to finish their master degree in Computer Engineering. They were later recruited by my employer once they graduated. My employer (their sponsor) helped them "convert" their student visa to a work visa (H1B I believe). Now both have applied for green cards but the process is lengthy (takes about 5 years) and is not free of conditions - one is to be employed. You get the point... no job => deportation and you cannot move out of your state.

So assuming everything works out and you have a sponsor, keep your job for 5 years til you get your green card it will take another 5 years until you become citizen.

I'd say you're probably better off trying to apply for the Diversity Lottery and get the green card right away if you're lucky.

England is not eligible for DV lottery.

I think you heard wrong. PLease consider what you are posting and how it may affect people who take your advice. So, if you don't know it, keep reading and don't post.

Sorry, but giving advice that is misleading and wrong isn't excused by adding a slight disclaimer, especially when that disclaimer is only in a subsequent post, and you repeat the same advice before that disclaimer even after someone queries it.

It's usually better to keep quiet than to give advice when you aren't sure of the subject you're talking about.

You have two options since neither of you is American - you can get a work visa, which requires somebody to give you a job and sponsor you into the country... or you can get a student visa, which requires you to be enrolled in a school and to be studying. You can't just say 'I'm going to come live in the US' - if you come in as a tourist you get a 90 day visit and that's it.

Karen - Melbourne, Australia/John - Florida, USA

STAGE 2A - Arriving in US (4 Nov 2004) to AOS Application (16 April 2005) - 5 months, 13 days (164 days)

STAGE 2B - Applying for AOS to GC Approval - 9 months, 4 days (279 days)

STAGE 3 - Lifting Conditions. Filing (19 Dec 2007) to Approval (December 11 2008)

STAGE 4 - CITIZENSHIP (filing under 5-year rule - residency start date on green card Jan 11th, 2006)

*N400 filed December 15, 2011

*Interview March 12, 2012

*Oath Ceremony March 23, 2012.

Can't argue with you on that one. Should have kept my mouth shut. I forgot why I stopped posting on forums long time ago. Now I remember.

Thanks for the friendly*reminder.

you speak vaguely (and mostly incorrectly) of the Naturalization conditions, not LPR nor H1B.

Section 316(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act ("INA") discusses the requirements for naturalization. INA §316(a) provides that no person, except as otherwise provided in this title, shall be naturalized, unless such applicant,

  • Immediately preceding the date of filing of his or her application for naturalization has resided continuously, after being lawfully admitted for permanent residence, within the United States for at least five years and during the five years immediately preceding the date of his or her application has been physically present therein for periods totaling at least half of that time, and who has resided within the State or within the district of the Immigration and Naturalization Services (hereinafter INS or Service) of the United States in which the applicant filed the application for at least three months;
