As far as I know even if you get married overseas, your local office is still texas. And yes only 16 states allow marriage between first cousins! But I know that countries from the middle east, 1st cousin marriage are very very common, and I've seen here some approvals like your case. Try to read some reviews from middle east embassy, you are not the first case. Im also married to my cousin but he is my third cousin

I read an article about "forbiden marriage" base on those marriage that are highly controversial like 1st cousin marriage and same sex marriage. Both oh them are forbidden in most of the states, but that doesn't mean they cant do it. Like an example: if a gay couple got married in New York (which is one of the states that allows it) and the moved to Idaho (dont allow gay marriage) even though they are still married. You can file for a k1 visa and then get married in one of the 16 states that allows 1st cousin's marriage, and keep living in texas. Or married OVERSEAS and file or CR1. Either way, you marriage will be legal in Texas, as long you dont do the ceremony in there

I know! But in the marriage certificate doesn't says if you are related it to each other... Only says your names and dates. If you get married you marriage is legal everywhere, even if they dont agree. But I dont wanna give you a bad advice if your lawyer told you that is or something.

The worst 'incorrect advice' ever given on VJ. Wow!!!!

the OP has to divulge that it is first cousin marriage. Lying to USCIS carries a lifetime ban. Please do not give advice to people if you do not know the legal ramifications

In order for the marriage to be legal you must move to a state where first cousin marriage is legal, even if married out of the country. First cousin marriage is illegal in Texas, so your only choice is to find a state where it is allowed and move. Remember you must be 100% honest to the USCIS or it can lead to a lifetime ban for your spouse to be. The lawyers you spoke to were correct.

How did you become a US citizen? Did you marry an American and then get divorced and now want to marry your cousin?

Oh good lord if I had 5 dollars for every person I met who told their wife shes only my cousin.. LOL LOL AND LOL

Americans dont traditionally marry their first cousins for the most part.. But the other thing, if the grandmother is different, she is NOT your first cousin. She is your first cousin once removed or something else. I think you are fine.. I think you need to talk to someone who understands cousin standards like a geneologist because different grandmothers does NOT mean you are first cousins.. thats not the same as all the same family members.
