Federal Rules Back Single-Sex Education in Public Schools

WASHINGTON, Oct. 24— The Bush administration is giving public school districts broad new latitude to expand the number of single-sex classes, and even schools, in what is widely considered the most significant policy change on the issue since a landmark federal law barring sex discrimination in education more than 30 years ago.

Two years in the making, the new rules, announced Tuesday by the Education Department, will allow districts to create single-sex schools and classes as long as enrollment is voluntary. School districts that go that route must also make coeducational schools and classes of “substantially equal” quality available for members of the excluded sex.

The federal action is likely to accelerate efforts by public school systems to experiment with single-sex education, particularly among charter schools. Across the nation, the number of public schools exclusively for boys or girls has risen from 3 in 1995 to 241 today, said Leonard Sax, executive director of the National Association for Single Sex Public Education. That is a tiny fraction of the approximately 93,000 public schools across the country.

What's wrong with single-gender schools?

The two best (I should say, the four best) schools with the highest grades and GSCE pass rate in my town, were single sex grammar schools.

I don't have a problem with it - I do wonder to whether single sex schools are better simply because they are single-sex.

There are of course general trends that suggest girls do better academically than boys.

Are there any real benefits for the students to be isolated based on gender?

Apparently girls do better in literacy and boys in math, but when they isolate them by gender it evens out.

Not much good practice for the real world, though, where they will soon discover most men have no problem ignoring women's ideas and talking right over them in a conversation.

I went to a single gender school for most of my school years. No complaints, I got a good education. But then it isn't like the years of school or university where I was in a co-ed environment weren't productive.. they were.

Based on my personal experience, I don't see the harm or the benefit of single-sex schools.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Actually there is a benefit from single-sex-schools, at least in Germany there is. Studies show back home that girls from single sex high schools do way better in nature science and maths than girls in mixed schools. Researches think it might be because in mixed school kids are more aware of those prejudices that girls are good in languages and boys are good in nature science, which is untrue when you seperate them. Also I think it is good to be sperated: less dating, more focusing on school!!!

Less dating, more same-sex coming-of-age exploration? I thought this was the plot of every French indie film?

I went to an all-girls high school and I think there are some advantages to single-sex education -- there IS less dating and more focusing on school work and girls would come to school and they wouldn't be obsessed with how they look. Everyone looked nice and had to follow certain uniform guidelines, but the feeling was "we can relax and pay attention; there's no one here to impress anyway." I later went to a co-ed university and I had no problems interacting with the menfolk.
