Hi All,

I may be getting a little ahead of myself here but I thought I would put this out there.

I am planning on studying and or starting/ finishng my Bachelor of Nursing Science degree when I move over to USA.

How do I go about applying for universities. I know that yes, you have to apply directly to them, but do I have to sit a test of some sort in order to provide them with a ranking? (We do things a lot differently in Australia)

Has anyone been through this process? Give me any tips on timelines and what to do? What to study if I have to take a test?

Typically you will need to take one of 2 tests, either the SAT or the ACT. Different schools may require one or the other or they may accept either.

And the transcripts from your previous school.

There may be an additional requirement for a BNS program, but those are the basics to get into most universities over here.

If you finished college in Australia or want to continue your studies here in the US, you have to have your transcript evaluated first.

How about contacting the colleges you might be applying to? You already know what area/city you would live when arriving, unless of course you both are open to move after your arrival to a different are, in which case, hopefully you have some idea of the possible areas.

Once you know the area/city, find out what schools are there and then contact them directly. Make sure that when you contact them, they do understand you will not be enrolling as international student so you know what the requirements are. Also, many times, colleges consider the student as 'out of state' for tuition purposes until you have 1 year residence in the state you are living. Check what their policies are for green card holders in terms of tuition and resident status. You might also want to check what kind of financial aid they have (outside the government loans). Also check what is the application period, most accept new students for Fall and Spring terms, some only in the Fall. I'm assuming you are thinking of a credited college; that said, there are probably many private colleges that are not credited (yet provide a degree that leads to licensing in the state you will be); depending on your long term goals, you need to enroll in the "correct" type of college. Noncredited colleges are much more easier to enroll, but quality varies quite a bit IMHO.

If some of the requirements involve standardize tests (SAT for example), you can start preparing already so you can take the test asap.

Before I forget, you need to check with the prospective colleges whether they would take your past coursework transcripts as is and validate everything or what is their process. If you have already started your degree, there is always the possibility of transferring credits, you want to check on that too.

Good luck!

Thankyou for that! I guess I have to do some research and start contacting the universities.

You will apply to each university individually.

Where I am, you need to be a resident for 1 year before instate tuition is charged. Out of state tuition is $9000-$15000 per year, in state is still $7000.

There is no HECS or HELP like Aus but there is grants and other loan options.

You will need to have your transcripts accredited to US standards and you will be placed according to your credits and any additional testing they require. You may not get 1-1 credits for classes you have taken. You may not get any credits for classes you have taken (rare).

Also depends on if you already have an RN degree. You will more than likely need to obtain your RN through the state you live here before being accepted into an RN to BSN program. In CA you must have your RN license to enroll in these sorts of programs. I am sure your licensing from Australia will be sufficient to obtain your RN license here in the states.

If you have already completed at least the first year of nursing school in Australia, you should be eligible to apply to nursing school as a transfer student. Usually in the states, people first gain admission to university, then if they meet the requirements, they can seek admission to nursing school. Many universities will use World Education Services when validating foreign credentials, but not all, so you need to ask each one you apply to first.

As long as your spouse has been resident for more than a year and payed taxes in the state you wish to attend university in, you should be eligible for the instate tuition rate.
