Hello all,

I've been reading the posts for a few days now, gathering all the nuggets of info that everyone's pooling together. I've only just started filling out the forms here at home, then will take them to my fiance (still getting used to that word...) in 2 weeks time to finish off. Still haven't told the parents...neither of us have. Mostly because mine will think I'm too young (going to be 21 in June) and expect me to start working in the UK after I graduate this summer...Got a feeling this is the start of a long, lonely road, which is why I joined the forum today. Everyone seems so helpful.

Please reply if you have any advice for filing the I-129F, experiences of the CSC or feel the pressures of being a young'un.

Thanks!

Be easier if you had specific questions about the process.

Well. For starters, I think you should tell your parents before you send off the information. My fiance and I just had to tell my parents that we were getting married. I am the US citizen, my fiance is from England. I can't really share many experiences with you as we've only just sent out our information this month. But, I can tell you that I was very afraid to tell my parents because my mom is a bit overprotective of me (I'm only 20 by they way) but, it was a lot easier than I had imagined. We told her and she pretty much said "As if I didn't see that coming." They're smarter than you think, and i'm sure they already have an idea about what's going on with you and your fiance. As far as CSC goes thats the same service center I am sending to. They are not the fastest in processing, but not the slowest either. I got my 1st notice only about a week after I sent my petition. I've seen some people get approved from there very quickly though. Just depends on how lucky you get.

Well since there are only two service centers that process the petition and it is known that VSC is fastest, then CSC is the seond fastest or the slowest dependant on your outlook....

Maybe you need to send your parents a text message and go like this:

"Yo mom and pops, am here chilling with my chick and soon she will be having a ring on her left hand, guess which finger! Whats up with that? Gotta problem with that? Holla back!".

I guess they will be in on it, henceforth.

Actually I'm the 'chick'. Guess that wasn't clear

Here is the female version:

"Yo mom. Remember when you told me to stop playing with boys until I grew up? Well am now grown and will soon have a new household. Guess how? The joke is on you and dad. Hit me up if you have any follow up questions"

 that was a little comical relief for me.

Anyhoo, sorry about that. I thought TSC was still doing visa's as well?

Remember most of your parent's concerns will be the same no matter where you fiance is from, you are young, you have your whole life in front of you now so why tie yourself down now, how long have you known him, how well do you really know him. You need to be able to answer these as well as the worries they will have about you being so far away. As for the distance, remind them how easy it is to travel the world now. They may be very concerned that if things go wrong they will be too far away to help you. Be ready to eexplain how you will deal with helping yourself including being able to just jump on a plane and come back if you have to.

Love on it's own isn't usually a good enough reason to parents to justify what you are doing, to them you will always be their little girl, that's normal and if they didn't have questions about your decision they wouldn't be very good parents.

Be prepared to explain to them about why you and your fiance have chosen to make a life together in the USA instead of the UK. Make sure you know what kind of job opportunities are available to you when you move. Show them that you have made a reasoned decision to move and are not just jumping into marriage.

If they still don't agree with your decision it will be harder to go ahead without their support but not impossible.

Good luck with talking to them and please do make sure you talk to them before you file any paperwork, even if they are not involved in your decision to marry your fiance they still deserve to know before you actually do anything.

Maggie

I'm 21, I had to spit it out. My mom seemed like she was kinda expecting it and was thrilled.

I had only known him since October of 2005 and I told her in July of 2006.

Spit it out. Keeping it a secret will just add more stress to the pile.

Plus, what I told another younger filer.

You will probably not be meeting the financial requirements to bring him over, which means you will need a co-sponsor. It will be MUCH easier if your parents are willing to support you and help you out on this.

Good luck, PM me if you have any more questions :)

Welcome to VJ, fellow youngin! There was a thread focused mostly on the 'telling your parents' thing just a week or so ago, perhaps you'll find some helpful tips there as well:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...c=37538&hl=

I'm really glad to see there's a handful of fellow young people going through this, if memory serves at least four of us are young couples with a fiance in the UK now!

Best to go ahead and spill the beans now, holding on to it just makes things harder. When I called my folks I got this long drawn-out groan from my father, then he proceeded to drive nine hours just to come see me and give me a good talking to. And Im 27 :) He got over it, and both parental units have come to realize Im an adult and I can make my own good decisions. Yours will too, just be patient, let the groans roll off and show them that yes, you really know what you're doing. Welcome to VJ, feel free to PM me if you like. :) Cheers

We're also a young couple. My husband and I decided not to inform his parents about our marriage or our immigration proceedings. But, like all secrets, they eventually come out. His parents found out about two months ago and are still quite upset. They feel betrayed and other such nonsense.

However, we informed them numerous times about our desire to get married and they refused to accept the reality, so we decided to keep them in the dark about our life. Prior to that, they just didn't like our relationship nor did they think it would be anything more than a fling. They've made some nasty comments about me being American, so it's no secret that they do not like me. They're incredibly overbearing, judgmental, prejudice, and mean-spirited, so we feel justified in our original decision.

Given our situation and the details that I won't get into here, there's no way we would've done it differently even though we would've liked to. We wish we could've done it differently, though, because his parents are acting overly dramatic now and unnerving us to the point that we've ignored them for the last month.

Good luck.

I'm another young member of this site also going through the k1 visa route (I'm 24, not as young as you are though). Well, I truly do think honesty is the best policy. I had to tell my parents, well actually I told my mom first, since she's the nicer of the two. Then I made my mom tell my dad, I was kinda scared of his reaction, since I am his favorite daughter :D . But they both accepted it fairly well, better than I thought.

Well, I think they kind of expected it since I've been with my fiance for over 5 years now, they kind of knew it was coming. I also agree with the person who posted about your parents possibly being your co-sponsor for the financial stuff. I know I'm gonna need my dad to co-sponsor my fiance since this is my first job out of college, and I've only been working for a couple months now. So, go ahead and tell them, I mean they have to find out sooner or later right?
