Hi all VJ'ers,

While my timeline shows I am still awaiting an NOA2, I am trying to anticipate issues for after Jay gets here.... If I am right, it will take a couple of months before he can work legally.

My question is, what can a person do before getting here to improve chances of getting employed? Does anyone have questions on having to get transcripts converted, take accreditation/certification exams, online courses etc.

2.For those who had the hard time of getting jobs here, what advice do you have for someone who has roughly 6-9mths to get here?

We greately appreciate this.

World Education Services did my husbands Transcript. Its about $200.

If his qualifications transfer he should be able to apply like any one else once he has his EAD. But times are hard so he may need to look into training here as well. Since there at least 5-6 months from arriving before EAD is ready that is a great time to do it and keep busy. My husband took a 16 week pharmacy technician and had a job in a week from passing the national exam, full time and benefits. He plans to go back to school to become an RN now, none of this work is what he did in Ghana, so it was a way to re-invent himself.

The move is hard and feeling like you can't get a job is difficult so anything he can do to improve his chances of a job (even if it wasn't what he was doing before) is all he can do.

He really can't apply for jobs until he gets EAD, unless they will hire him and wait but in these times that seems very unlikely.

Best of luck!

Let me know if you have any more ?s

Once we are married, can anyone tell me what the requirements are for my fiance to be legally employed in the United States?

Whether he can work will depend on your status, his status, and what you apply for.

Are you a US citizen or LPR?

Did he enter the US legally?

1. He can polish up his resume with your help. Because 99% of job apps today are via emailing your resume. Or filling out a template online that would have the same format as a resume (asks for work history, dates).

he should compile his work and educational history

2. Do research online and compile a list of employers, companies, recruiters, placement agencies, etc. He can even send a resume in advance to them. Or at least have a list of companies ready. Nowadays you also write to potential companies, you don't just answer want ads.

I don't know his field so I don't know the requirements. If you know his field you can do research from here as to what the requirements are and prepare. If they require US training, he might have to do it here in the US, but at least you'd know what he needs to do. Good luck!

In addition to the other tips provided - network, network, network! Many people get jobs because someone they know knows someone at the company, or they met a future colleague at a networking event. Look for professional organizations that cover his area and also look for local/regional groups that may be affiliated with a larger, national group. This will help him get a feel for the types of jobs available and determine if his current qualifications are suffice or if he would need additional education. Also, if you live near a major university, check to see if they have a need for lab techs once he has secured the EAD.

Be sure to reach out to a career coach/counselor or placement agency to help review his résumé to ensure it fits with the American standard. Good luck!

I'm a USC. We are in the process of the K-1. I believe after more research this week I understand what we need to do. Get K-1, apply for SS card, get married, apply for AOS and work permit/AP. :-)

His field is audio engineering/musician and we will be living in Pittsburgh. I think he'll be able to find something. We still need to research any education requirements.
