They should have given you something showing your status as permanent resident when you entered the US with an I-94 stamp. I could be wrong about that, though.

Moving from IR-1/CR-1 Process & Procedures to Moving Here & Your New Life In America; topic is not about the visa process itself.

**Organizer hat off**

I have a question ,I have arrived in the states.. We have been to Social Security Office they said i needed to wait for an I94 i came here on CR1.. do I just wait for my green card and SSN to arrive in the mail?

I'm not familiar with SSA office procedures, but from what you post, it appears they (as well as some State agencies such as the WA Department of Licensing as another example) are behind the times with regards to the temporary green card received by CR-1 (and IR-1) visa holders at the POE. The temporary green card is a combination of the visa and an admission stamp by CBP.

To answer your question, if the SSA office did not accept the temporary green card, then you will have to until your actual green card arrives in the mail before returning the SSA office. Sometimes your Social Security card will arrive in the mail, but you do not need to wait for it if you do not want to.

I-94 is a card filled out on the plane. When you go through the immigration line, they keep the top part and give you the lower part. Is there one stapled in your passport? There should be a stamp called the I-551 in your passport which is your temporary green card. Did you show that at the SSA? Maybe you need to go back and ask for a supervisor.

You arrived on an immigration visa so you will not recceive an I-94 as that is for non-immigrates as you give that up when you leave the country after your authorized stay (or they take it from you when you complete your Adjustment of Status, but you already have done the Adjustment of Status via the I-130 visa application process). You should have received a stamp in your passport that has the words "I-551" and a written date for when it expires. That is your temporary GC as a GC is an I-551. Take your passport with the stamp back to the local SSA and show that to them. You might want to e-mail the main SSA on their website and explain your situation. They have been replying lately with an e-mail you can take to your local office in orderr to educate them on the proper procedures. Basically the I-551 stamp in your passport is the same as the physical GC as you are a LPR of the US.

You can wait for the SSC to arrive in the mail--sometimes it does and sometimes the person on the IR-1/CR-1 Visa has to go to the local SSA office to apply for it. I would also make certain your name is on the mailbox or that the postoffice knows you are to receive mail at that address as that has bit some people when the USPS returns the SSC. So take the e-mail, your passport with the I-551 stamp and reapply for your SSN. Just to be safe you may want to take a copy of your BC as a second form to prove age and identy.

I wish you luck as the SSA seems to be hit and miss about who knows what their job is,

Dave

CBP is no longer putting special stamps in passports that say I-551. At the bottom of an immigrant visa is the following annotation, "Upon Endorsement Acts As Temporary I-551 Valid For One Year." The 'endorsement' is a standard CBP admission stamp with the visa type and A# written in. The temporary green card is a combination of the visa and the admission stamp with the afore mentioned information written in. The OP will need to show the visa with the admission stamp to SSA personnel but as I alluded to in my prior post, SSA personnel may not be familiar with current temporary green cards and get nowhere.
