Hello everyone, I have a quick question. My husband and I were planning to go to Canada, but my passport has been expired a month ago. Do I need to have a passport to cross the boarder or greencard is fine?

Why did you let your passport expire? You will both need passport to cross into Canada.

You will need both a valid passport and your green card. From you signature I surmise you are from the PI and as such you would need a visa to enter Canada. With your green card however, you can enter Canada without a visa.

No.....you can report your marriage and apply for your new passport at the Philippine Consulate in Chicago. That office is in your jurisdiction...

Yes. But we didn't get married in my area. We went to Florida for our wedding.

While I agree with everyone, I also think it depends on BP's (Border Patrol) mood sometimes. When we entered Canada, I was asked for both my passport and GC. When we travelled to Mexico, I was only asked for the last one. So I volunteered to present my passport and even still, the BP was like... "No, I don't needt it" while checkin' out my (expired) GC's info in the system.

Here is what the Philippines Embassy/Consulate says about where to report your marriage:

"The marriage of a Filipino should be reported to and registered with the Philippine National Statistics Office through the Embassy/Consulate General having jurisdiction over the locality where the event took place."

My link.

It does not matter where you were married. Your consulate office is Chicago. They will be the office to take your application for new passport.

According to the Chicago consulate web site, they will only accept marriage certificates from States in their Jurisdiction. Link here: Report of marriage rules chicago consulate (scroll to the bottom). Of course, what they do in real life may be different, but thats not what it says.

Only Marriage Certificates from the following states are accepted by the Consulate:

Arkansas Mississippi

Illinois Missouri

Indiana Nebraska

Iowa North Dakota

Kansas Ohio

Louisiana Oklahoma

Michigan South Dakota

Minnesota Wisconsin

It is settled then. You will be staying in the US until you obtain US citizenship and can apply for a US passport. If you desire to travel before then, you will need to jump through all the hoops to renew your PI passport. Do not forget about the N-400 processing time too.

Good luck,

Dave

Actually, now that I think about it. When we went to Washington DC to register our marriage and get the passport in her married name, the first question the lady asked was "where did you get married?". She wasn't interested in where we lived.

It was pretty simple though. The marriage registration was done on the spot, and she had her married name passport in about a week and a half.
