American vs Filipino

hehe, the problem was my manager did not let me bill comp time the first visit on vacation.... so I had to eat food in the pantry... Still had steak, chicken, etc. Just no "nice meals" dining out.

But a good point almost all Americans have bank accounts and savings plus credit cards. Some Filipinos do not have bank accounts or a savings account...

Plus, as others have pointed out: most Americans compete with the "Joneses" on things while many Filipinos just get what they need to live.

wasnt that you who posted that you were broke and in debt after your last trip to the philippines when you brought your fiancee to the u.s.? and what difference does it make if you have a bank account if you are broke? isnt charging up your credit card the same thing as a filipino getting credit at the sari sari? do you see any hypocrisy in your statements?

Filipinos just get what they need to live.

Smart-phones and designer t-shirts are necessary to live in the Philippines? Even the barefoot street beggars that bathe in the roadside ditches have those.

When I was in college I was dating a Filipina nurse and was at her family's house for a party. Her sister got rice from one of the rice dispenser boxes and I was like

Her sister said "American's staple is potatoes, ours is rice" to which I replied "but we don't have a huge bin in our kitchens where we push the 2 button and two potatoes drop out" LOL

I later bought a rice dispenser for my inlaws when they got married (my best friend married my then wife's sister) and his family freaked out the same way

I think our cultures have way more in common than most people care to admit, people just tend to notice the differences.

ah - rice dispenser. I found one at a garage sale for 2 bucks - steam cleaned it (cause ya never know) and fiddled with the dispenser bits - it works. Best 2 bucks I've spent for April

I also told my fiance that in the Philippines, people go on a healthier diet by doing a "No Rice" rule. That made him laugh.

I have heard that before... the no rice rule. What they should do is the reduced salt rule, I can't believe how many I know that have high blood pressure or have died because of high blood pressure.

Diabetes is a big killer there, and the polished rice provides no nutrition other than simple starch. You can find brown rice, but it is usually used for chicken feed. The chickens have a healthier diet than most of the folks in the Philippines. There are lots of fresh fruits and vegetable available, but the way they are often prepared removes much of the nutrition. The wife used to eat lots of sour fruits to relieve her constipation from eating all that white rice. She is especially fond of green mangoes and fish sauce, or pomeloes and cane vinegar.

There is lots of salt in most diets (be is fish sauce, soy sauce or whatever), which causes high blood pressure and affects the kidneys .... diabetes plus strokes and on on.

in the Philippines, they eat the loser from Friday fights.... chicken dinner Friday nights...... in USA, many, not all, have have Friday Fish Night.....(and in USA rarely do you eat the loser, usually the winner is sold at auction after the State or local county Fair)

USA has the 4-H county/state fairs where animals are judged by raising and common traits... not by who survives....

USA, pets are treated almost if not better then humans, including having insurance. Sometimes rewards are posted for a "pet". In the Philippines, sometimes they have pets, but in the end, the "pet" gets eaten....

Bartering for goods and services is more prevalent in the Philippines. Trade some fish for some rice, or piglets or chickens, trade the piglets for a big pig, trade the big pig for a boat, catch some more fish, trade the fish for nets, catch more fish, trade the fish for rice, and gas... bartering is not a typical way of life in USA.

wasn't saying anything about dogs... As a matter of fact, dogs wasn't even mentioned. I was thinking more of "goldfish", "pigs", or "chickens/roosters". You went there on your thinking....

the main thing which got me was taking Gretchen driving around the other day...there were many reward posters out for missing "pets", including dogs, cats, birds, a snake, and I can't remember what else.... one poster had a $3,000 reward... It shocked her.

we also talked about county fairs... and what it is... we eat the "winner". the look on her face was priceless...you don't eat the "winner" in her village....
