I'm on the August, 2011 application list, but haven't yet received a response.

Judging by the associated thread, it should be happening any day.

I'll be leaving the country for a month in two days, and away for about a month.

Obviously, if I'm approved, everything is great. What would happen, though, if I instead got a Request for Evidence (RFE) in the mail while I was away?

I might not see it for a month after its arrival. How much time are you given to return it?

Thanks in advance!

It's hard to imagine asking someone to open every piece of mail received at our apartment for a month, just to see if we received an RFE!

The envelope will be clearly marked with something referring to USCIS. I got two letters this month, they both say "U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services" on the front. One also mentions "Department of Homeland Security". It should be clear enough. :)

No RFE during this ROC process yet.

But I did get one during AOS. Was given 87 days to respond.

Based on that you have enough time if you will only be away for a month.

BUT!! I would still arrange for a relative or a friend (preferably someone with access to a scanner!) check your mail while you are away.

Safe travels, and hope you get an approval instead of RFE!!

Your joking right? Just ask them to pick up your mail. They would only open the ONE LETTER that's from the USCIS .

Are you tracking your case status on the USCIS site? If you are, then you'll know ahead of time if that RFE is coming, or not.

Good luck

Hi Scott;

I'm sure you know me from August 2011 VSC list. You will be fine, even If you get a RFE (Hopefully not).

You will have plenty time to respond almost 3 months, let's say a RFE letter came right after you've left US, since you will be abroad for a month, you do have still 2 months to respond anyway.

Nothing to worry, I also think your case will be handled within this week & hopefully you will be hearing something right before the Memorial Day weekend. See you at the August 2011 thread.

Until then take care & have a nice trip !.... Btw, you'd better get somebody to check your mails just in case.

I'm tracking my case online but I don't even have the stage "RFE". Do they add it when they issue RFE? Do you have the RFE step? I'm just curious. I have Acceptance/Initial Review/Decision/Post Desicion.

AOS from B1/B2:

January 12 - I-130 & I-485 Delivered

January 24 - Both checks cashed

January 26 - Both NoAs received

February 9 - Biometrics letter received

February 17 - Biometrics appointment

January 18 - Green Card Ordered (No Interview)

January 22 - Green Card Mailed

First of all, DO NOT TRUST USCIS ON-LINE SYSTEM, it is not always updated & does not give details like a RFE but you can still believe old-fashioned mail delivery system by USPS.

FYI, there is no RFE stage in case status of USCIS on-line system.

Cino: you are right that the USCIS site doesn't give "detailed-details" about the RFE. However, from personal experience, the USCIS site did forewarn us that we'd be getting the RFE notice in the mail. No "detailed-details" given on the USCIS site, but a 'heads-up' that an 'old-fashioned' letter was on its way from the USCIS regarding RFE.

In our case, the site was very helpful. Just like the OP, Scott s, my fiance (USC) was away from home for awhile (but for work). He had family collect his mail, and we forewarned them (thanks to the USCIS site) that an important letter was on route from the USCIS. Within a few days, the letter was received, and scanned to myself & my fiance (USC). I was able to get ahead start on what the RFE requested, on behave of my fiance (USC). THE END.

HOPEfully, you won't get an RFE. If you do, you'll have time to deal with it, just like the others have stated.

Cheers and good luck

Ok... You've seen your case perfectly on-line & you knew that RFE is coming, but that is not always the case; most of the RFE's are not updated anyway.

What I'm saying is USCIS on-line system does not work flawlessly!....
