Canadian studying in U.S.A. with a renewed passport - how do I get a new visa?

Hello!

I'm Canadian, and I've already been studying in the U.S.A. for a year on my F-1 (I think) visa. Then I went back to Canada to get my passport renewed, but I know that the visa that was stapled in the old passport will no longer be valid. How do I get a new one?

When I got my first visa, it was at the ground border. I'll be going back to the U.S. tomorrow by plane - will they be able to get me a new visa at customs there? I'll bring my I-20 and new passport, but do they need to see my old visa? Other people who did it all said they brought in their old passports with the old visa, but is this required as I don't have my old passport yet (it's in the mail).

Will they need any other documents that were needed for the original application of the visa?

I found the following from CPB:

CONTINUING STUDENTS

Continuing students who are going to travel outside of the United States must see their foreign student advisor and obtain an endorsement from the DSO or RO. The endorsement will be made on page 3 of the SEVIS Form I-20 or page 1 of the DS-2019. When returning to the United States, a continuing student/exchange visitor must present a valid SEVIS Form I-20 or DS-2019 with the DSO or RO signature showing that the student is active and in good standing with the school or program.

Just a word of caution, what I quoted does not explicitly say that you do not need to present a valid visa inside of the passport. So you still may need the old passport with the visa inside of it.

Unfortunately I do not have the old passport. It is in the mail, and I won't be getting it until about a week, and my plane leaves tomorrow.

As a Canadian, you should not have had a student visa stapled into your passport, that probably was your I94. You take your I20 with you and your new passport to the POE, they'll process you there

Generally, you just bring your new passport along with the old one where the visa is.
