my MIL was denied, I had my Senator write a letter, she applied 3 months later and was approved for a single entry. She came to USA and went back as promised. She applied again and was given a 5 year multi-entry this time.

Was the senators letter something that the senator gave you to give your MIL to submit at the interview or was it something the senator sent to the embassy or what? Do remember what it said?

letters from senators/congressmen have NO authority or power over the VOs...none, zero, zilch....why? Well, think back to Govt 101 class...remember those three big circles the teacher drew on the blackboard, then labeled as follows: 'Executive' 'Legislative' 'Judicial'???

And the key point....that no member of one circle can tell someone from another circle what to do...

Congress/Senate is in the Legislative branch; the State dept is in the Executive branch...so no senator/congressman can order a VO to do anything....

and no senator nor congressman is likely to have first hand, fully comprehensive knowledge about the intentions of some visa applicant living thousands of miles away....

Why were you rejected ? You must change whatever they saw as a negative into something different. So if they say you lack ties you must show ties. If you apply with the same story you get the same results. You must show a better case. In some countries it is nearly impossible to show a better case expecially if you are young and single.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

My Senator has a special email address for the Embassy. I know there is no official power over the visa application but within 10 minutes of my MIL visa being approved I received an email from my Senators office congratulating my MIL on her visa approval. Someone at the Embassy was certainly anxious to tell the Senator she had been approved. Perhaps it was a fluke but I have only three experiences to judge. 1. MIL applies without Senator letter--Denied 2. MIL applies with Senator letter--approved. 3. MIL applies again after Senator letter-approved 5 year multi-entry visa. You be the judge.

I was denied on my first application and tried again after I did some traveling in Asia and Europe. The CO who interviewed me on my second attempt told me that my travels helped a lot in the approval of my visa. I got 10-year multiple entry visa.

Congressmen have no authority over DOS and DHS, but DOS and DHS both do have a certain interest in pleasing members of congress. At least taking action when a query is made. Also, a "recommendation" from a congressman is a good asset. The 5 year visa was most likely given because she proved she had left without overstaying.
