LOL... listening to right-wing radio

I was listening to this right wing radio show, don't remember the name, but i was listening to this guy talking of u know the typical extremist agenda.. abortion is bad, no gay marriages because it's wrong (#######? according to the law or god), and he was talking how if US want's to enforce their border security they also have to look at their lives and say 'am i doing the right thing? thats right, we shouldn be against spanish classes' and i was #######??! since when the border fence has to do with learning diff languages..

now.. I don't want to start a flame war... but, during my short living in USA, I've found IMO that American's take foreign languages too personal, technically, they are probly one of the few countries I know who are against foreign languages and see them as an offence.. my question.. why?

I'm not gonna say 'well to help the illegal immigrants u have to learn their language' and all that bs.. most countries like mine don't have government services in other languages than spanish, and I'm pretty thankful that US Govt has spanish services, thanks to it, I fixed a mistake with the IRS (wrong last names) that could have taken 2 hours in english, 30 min in spanish... but why is it wrong to learn other languages (not only spanish).. I mean, I know languages are not for everyone, but, I've been to other countries and people don't seem offended for knowing 2 or 3 or even 4 languages, and using them constantly, and the funny thing is, those countries (like Holland) require a 100% understanding of the local language, but they still learn more than 1 (besides their dialect)..

yes yes, USA is too big, and probly some of the citizen will never have the need to leave, as in any other countries, but I would think a foreign language looks pretty impressive on a resume, and yes, due to the situation with Meheeco and los amigos, most businesses don't seem language as a barrier, and will hire bilingual personnel..

my point is not to tell everybody to learn spanish.. but, if the next most used language weren't spanish, and were, I dunno, freakin swedish.. I'd be learning swedish right now!! maybe there's not a direct benefit of being bilingual, trilingual or whatever, but hell, it won't hurt u (unless u cuss someone in their language lol)

thoughts anyone? and please let's not turn this into a flame war-'dem illegals must learn amurkin'-ayy if u don't like America leave.. plis

Could be any of those guys really - there's little to differentiate them, aside from how vitriolic and rabid they are. Though half of that is a "ratings act" IMO ;)

but the 'worrying' thing was that it wasn't the host, it was someone who called, with his typical southern accent.. lol. that's the thing.. is the public becoming more xenophobic? or it has always been like that.. because, I mean, language is an important now of all the mess that's taking place in US..

they speak spanish, they might be illegals. they speak arab in an airport, they might be terrorists, they speak this language, ahh they don't want to be part of the melting pot.. since when language has taken such a political importance, or, well part of a fear strategy.. like that of the extremist republicans that say that the hispanic illegals have an agenda to dethrone english and make spanish the officia language.. ffs, those people are hungry, they don't have a fukcin agenda in their minds, they wanna get a job... now the governments might have an agenda.. but not the poor

I tend to think its because they like to talk loud to disguise the fact that they don't actually have anything to say ;)

How extreme. I bet if it was put to a straight up or down vote in the U.S. both of those would history.

The talk radio "shock jocks" as well as certain frontline politicians seem to think that shouting the odds and drowning out any possible opposition should pass for reasoned debate in a democratic country.

They then have the gall to call others "UnAmerican". Can you say hypocrisy?

I never understood right wing talk radio -- even if I agreed with everything these people say I would find their constant droning boring and predictable (plus -- all the top rated hosts are on during the day -- shouldn't their listeners be doing their bit for the american economy and working at this time?)

The biggest mystery is Laura Ingraham -- she has morning drive, surely a coveted timeslot -- and all she does is shriek. I would have thought the mostly male audience would pay good money to not listen to a woman with a shrill voice haranguing them constantly.

Michael Savage is funny though

Interestingly that's the ONLY reason I would ever listen to someone like that. I watch Bill O'Reilly sometimes too - never ceases to amaze me how he has a clearly "leading" agenda, doesn't let his guests finish a sentence and still sells his show as "no spin".

The opposite extremists are just as bad (Al Franken et al) - the whole phenomenon is representative of the general commercialisation of politics that encourages people to adopt these bizzare standpoints on issues that discourage people to actually educate themselves about the issues in favour of populist soundbites.

I mean, the least people can do is get their "own" opinion - rather than simply regurgitating someone else's.

It's a bit like the SAT's. The kids got used to multiple choice questions and panicked royally when confronted with discursive essay work. Point is you don't use/develop the skills, you lose them.

Most people think it's cool that I can speak a foreign language.

Anyway I'm not against anyone learning spanish. I think it's great when someone wants to learn another language. But I would be against forcing anyone to learn it.

I think it's because they have their mind so full of convincing everyone their morals are wrong or they had better "find the way" and subscribe to their agenda that they would have no room left in their brains to learn another language. Sometimes I just smile quietly to myself when I ( blonde haired green eyed white girl) speak fluent spanish with my husband in public, because I think they're just jealous they didn't get off of their lazy behinds in H.S. and University and actually pay attention in language classes. I'm so happy I learned to speak Spanish, it has earned me many a promotion and commendation at work, not to mention the heart of the most wonderful man in the world!

I'm curious as to how The Colbert Report compares with O'Reilly, as I've never spent more than 10 seconds watching Billy boy. More than ten seconds and I'd be throwing things at the TV, and then I'd have to buy a new one.

If you cant read the sign (Its not that clear) It says SPEAK ENGLISH OR DIE. These are our good republican boys who listen to Micheal Savage and his ilk. His show should be rated.
