Travelling on visa in Passport

Hey guys!

So, im off! Flight is booked for 2 March straight in to Denver, i just have a couple of questions!

I will actually be flying back to England on the 5th April until the 26th. Is this going to pose any kind of problems, and am I able to travel fine with just the visa in my passport?

Secondly, SSN! Learning to drive is top of the list as soon as I get there! I have a provisional UK licence, and I know I have to wait a while for the SSN (right?!), so how soon can I get my permit??

Driver's Licences are determined by state, so you'll want to check into the DMV for your state so check for the requirements.

No, no issues traveling. You'll have the stamp in your passport which allows you to travel right away

If you haven't already noticed, there is a note printed at the bottom of your visa that states "upon endorsement, acts as temporary I-551 for 1 year" or something to that effect. CBP will place an admission stamp on the passport page next to your visa and write in the visa type and A number in that admission stamp fields. The visa and admission stamp together act as a temporary green card until the actual card arrives.

Since this is a fairly new development (as I understand it) and you asked about learning to drive, state DMV's or Department's of Licensing are probably behind on the times in regards to accepting it as valid proof of identity (speaking from experience, I know DOL here in WA is).

Your spouse can call the local DMV/BMV.

I called for my husband, they said he can drive with his Honduran license for 6 months legally. He needs his SSN# before he can apply for an OH driver's license.

Not sure how old you are, but I would imagine you would bypass the permit and apply for the license. (That's how it is in OH, after 18). I checked the OH BMV website and it was not helpful, less than 5 mins on the phone I got all the info I needed.

The lady at the SS office told us up to 4 weeks for SSN to arrive in the mail.

Honestly the best thing to do is go to the social security office as soon as you can and ask them for a ss number then you'll get it within 14 days. I was waiting for mine for 2months then decided I couldn't be bothered to wait any longer so i went in and they had no record of me. I guess even though i ticked the box stating i wanted a ss number they forgot to process it.. this has happened to a few people it seems.

for SSN - show up at the local SSA office about 10 business days past yer poe date, and apply.

whilst yer waiting, today, use the advanced search tool here (on a pc, not a handphone), look for my posts with 'SSA SAVE' as the search terms - I've some longish 'how to' floating about.
