My wife did her interview in Warsaw, the same as your fiancee will. Her English skills were also limited. The interview was done in Russian with an embassy translator. There were no issues regarding language. They are set up for this. Just remember that she will need a visa from the Polish embassy in Minsk to transit into Poland.

My Wife will be going to Poland for a interview

how much english will she be expecting to know

she has low skills now

what is the best way to get her up to speed

She does not need any.

Alla speaks Englsih just fine and did so before the interview, but when we arrived, they asked her in Russian which language she preferred, she chose Russian. They gave her the choice of Russian, Ukrainian or English. As far as anyone at the consulate knows, they never heard her speak English

Any Consular Officer doing a visa interview with a beneficiary from Belarus will speak Russian or English.

My fianacee (now wife) did also not speak English much, so I sent an email asking if they provided translator service at the Warsaw Embassy. Here is the reply I got:

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your correspondence. There are Russian speaking translators available during interviews.

We hope you will find this information useful.

Sincerely,

Public Liaison Unit

Consular Section

U.S. Embassy, Warsaw

I was with her during the interview, and the questions were not difficult (they allowed me to answer questions as well). I wish you the best of luck.

My fiance was asked in what language did we use when we communicated.....she said English, so she had her interview in English.

She has some trouble with a couple of questions (because the little one was not cooperating) and asked to change to Russian and was told they would continue in English.

If you guys use only English now, better just be prepared just in case.

i wonder if they will laugh when she says we use google translate, she lives about 30 miles outside of the city. so they are no english clubs near her, last visit I gave her some audio lessons on an mp3 player, but there is no time for her study, she is busy emailing me, about 80 times a day

You'd be surprised how well it works. It's a statistical method, so the more people use it and correct it, the better it gets. I hate that I can't specify the proper tense (it tends to be too formal) but overall, it's not too bad. I speak russian, but I can't write it, and I use google translate for that. It also has a transliteration mode where you type what the word sounds like in russian and it will convert it to cyrillic.

For all you guys with wives who don't speak good English...you have no idea how lucky you are.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
