VJ Friends,

After months of ordeal, my fiancee's K1 visa has finally been approved. It still hasn't sunk in yet. We had the interview back in late November but got blue and we were both so depressed that I just put everything immigration-related out of my mind and haven't been back to the forum since.

I will write an interview report once my fiancee has the visa in hand, but I have updated my sig to include what we went through.

We were interviewed multiple times by an investigator. Full psychological interrogation tactics were employed during the phone interviews to try to get us to react and possibly say the wrong thing. But if your relationship is real, then nothing will stand in our way.

Extremely personal questions were asked including protection choice. The investigator called my ex-wife and I think her boyfriend. Her ex-husband and father were called, who I would consider hostile witnesses.

I wish that they sent investigators to my fiancee's apartment complex instead of doing everything over the phone so they can see that she lives by herself.

Here's our backgound:

I know I'm rambling but I'm not thinking straight, especially since I wasn't able to get back to sleep after the 3am phone call :)

Sounds like you are descibing our case... don't be surprised if she finds out later that they in fact did come around snooping and asking questions in person. Great news that it happened befoe the medical expired...

congrats!!

To quotes a movie, “So how does it happen, great love? Nobody knows... but what I can tell you is that it happens in the blink of an eye. One Moment you're enjoying your life, and the next you're wondering how you ever lived without them.” I felt I found something with Kieu that is rare in life... true love.

Protection Choice?

Are you serious?

I understand that they have to dig, but are representing the United States and there should be boundaries of what is appropriate conduct. Makes me wonder if they are outsourcing these investigations to contractors that don't mind using such bush league tactics.

Doesn't surprise me but is not allowed really. I went through this before 25 years ago from my first wife and they interviewed us for her citizenship. It was pretty good and easy but the dude ask me finally if she performed a certain sex act . I got mad and said he was out of line and asked to see his boss. The interview ended soon after that and we were ushered out. She got her citizenship.

I was told by his boss it was uncalled for him to ask that and apologized to me.

This is interesting. Is there a list of "illegal questions" for immigration interviews, similar to those you can't be asked in a job interview, e.g., your age, your marital status, etc?

Don't know of a list but was just told that they can't ask about sexual practices. This was a long time ago though. My wife had gotten mad at me for getting upset as she thought they may deny her and deport her. She told me to just tell him what he asked.

I guess that women are more levelheaded and practical about these things. Viet women (in Viet Nam) must be thick skinned to deal with the chauvinistic attitude experienced there (especially in the workplace).

I can't imagine my response if they asked my fiancée something like that. I would probably look like a hamster in an aquarium trying to claw through the glass.

The Consular officers are supposed to be respectful, that is part of the mission statement if I recall.. but they asked thuy when we first had sex and I have heard similar questions from others in the past... The thing is, most people don' want to make a stink because the CO's do have power in the situation... I remember Jim saying he told his wife that if they ask to respond that the question is inappropriate and not discuss such topics. I wonder what the CO would do if at the point the question was asked, the person said, I want to speak to your supervisor immediately...

Thuy just told me something they asked her that she didnt want to tell me about before... What are you going to do when he meets someone else and starts a relationship with them and divorces you? I was seperated but not divorced when we met... She said she did not answer, just gave the CO a dirty FU look....
