Hi all i'm new to this so all the help i can get would be good

My fiance and I are thinking of trying for a k1 visa but I have a

criminal record in the UK, the offences were possession of an offensive weapon and affray

the offences were commeted 9 years ago and I got a fine and community service, all of which have been paid and done

can anybody please tell me if this should stop me getting a k1

No it was a knife but any blade ove 6inch in the UK is classed as an offensive weapon

You should be ok. You need to admit to the offence on the forms, and may be asked a couple of questions about it at interview.

up untill the offences i had a clean record and not been in trouble since, it was a one off and had letters to take to court saying it was out of character, the said weapon was not used it was just i had it in my possession

i just checked up on it with both offences the max would of been 12 months

while i think it should be ok you will need to obtain a "memorandum of conviction" from the clerk of the court you went to and you will also probably need a "subject access" report which you get through your local police force. not sure how much the memorandum of conviction costs or how long it will take to get one but the subject access costs a tenner and takes up to 40 days. it also wont harm you to get a few people to write character references for you... you might not actually need them but i think it is best to be as prepared as possible.
