Senate Approves Mexican Border Fence

Yeah, really. Didn't we fight a whole war over this almost 150 years ago?
I knew someone would stay this. It's a common perception, but it isn't true.

That war was fought over the notion that the Federal government was empowered to impose its will on people who no longer wished to receive its governance. Some states realized that despite the protections of the Constitution, the central government was grabbing an ever-increasing amount of power for itself, and the original notion of a republic was becoming lost. They wanted out, and when they declared their intentions, the tyrannical Federal government headed by Lincoln issued a "Proclamation" against these states. Sound a lot like government by decree, doesn't it? He couldn't declare war, since only congress can do that, and neither did he respect the notion that, "That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." In this respect, Lincoln is no different from King George III, who "has abdicated Government here by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us."

Make no mistake, abolition of slavery was just a "respectable excuse" to greatly expand Federal power at the expense of States Rights.

That fence thing kinda reminds me of the Berlin wall we had in Germany.

oh except for the fact that Mexico and the US are not one country, so yeah, I can kinda see where your coming from.

West Germany and the GDR (East Germany) were two different countries when the Berlin Wall existed, just like Mexico and the USA. Berlin was geographically located in East Germany but there was a corridor through it so West Germans could reach it. West Berlin was "in" West Germany, East Berlin was in East Germany, and they were (at that time) two separate countries. They split off in 1949 and reunified in 1990. The Berlin Wall was built in 1961 and began to be torn down in 1989, though I'm told some sections still exist.

I'm sorry, I'm hellishly pedantic. :blush:

I don't see the similarity at all. Instead of imprisoning your own people in East Germany with a wall...it is more about keeping foreign trespassers from Mexico from illegally entering the USA.

No prob. I prefer to be corrected where needed, but you got my point.

They were technically not the same Country, but there was always a group looking towards the re-unification of the country.

I do agree that you can't compare a US/Mexico border fence with the Berlin Wall, though. They're not even the same thing, not even close. :thumbs:

That's true. Mexico has a lot more Mexicans trying to sneak into the US than Berlin does.

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! America must take strides to penalize those who enter, harbor, and employ illegal immigrants. America should also use its political and economic power to put pressure on the Mexican government that clearly has turned the other cheek to this problem by the omission and actions (or lack there of) of it's own president. They will do nothing, which means that we must do something profound that makes a statement (and we must be consistent). I can't believe that people had the nerve to march the streets (here in the US) to protest upholding the law because it does not benefit many of those who actually protested. Yes, it's not just Mexicans that break the law in turns of illegal immigration, but as I previously stated, without exercising some very pronounced measures we're in store for more of the same. America actually has laws in place concerning illegal immigration but they have not been exercised therefore not respected. Some folks have taken "the land of the free" part of our national anthem to a new level. In fact, nothing is free...
