If you don't have the 3 years of tax returns, I would include a letter from your employer/employment verification form. You could also send in copies of your bank statement (3 months) and pay stubs (3 months).

lol I had to go and look back. I didn't even realize it until you stated it. It does say to attach only the previous year's tax return. I'm going to take a guess and the 3 year thing comes from the fact that the IRS will give up to the 3 previous years' tax return transcripts? Not sure though.

That was one thing that scare me all the way until right now that i discover this website, people that has a relative married someone from my native country Laos were saying you need 3 years, I was hopeless because I had only 2010 and will file 2011 sometime soon. But someone in here says I need to file 3 years of income tax since I am self-employed, do u know if that is true? Or same apply to me, just 1 year income will do me good??

The old requirement was three years. Now it says one year:

Sometime before we filed in 2007 the requirement was 3 years. It was changed around that time to previous year only and more returns were optional if they would help your case.

We always filed copies of prior year return + current income info. Not sure why this 3-yr thing keeps popping up years and years after the requirements were changed.

NOTE: It always helps to (1) download the form then (2) download the instructions then (3) read it then (4) ask questions about parts that are not clearly outlined.

Tax return requirements are clearly spelled out (implying OP hasnt even read the form).

NOTE: Proof of current income (employment letter, paystubs, bank statements) is required no matter how many years of tax returns are submitted. The IO spent more time looking at the current income info at our interviews (including AOS interview) than looking at the tax return.

Just sayin'

i don't get it.

I am very confused about the I-134 myself. The instructions say that you need your previous tax return if you are self-employed. Doesn't that mean that if you're not, bank statements, pay stubs, and an employment letter will suffice? I am only asking because I graduated from university December 2010, and therefore, did not make enough for the requirement, until 2011. (and I doubt my taxes will be done in time for the interview). I would really appreciate any advice on this, I am pretty stressed about it.

The I-134 is a general purpose affidavit of support that is still in use for non-immigrant visas. The Department of State on its website says, for K visas, "It may be required." Many of the embassies and consulates make it a requirement, and also require a copy of your most recent signed tax return as it was filed with the IRS. That is straight out of the current DOS handbook. If you didn't file a return, you may have to offer a letter of explanation why you were not required to file a tax return.
