Hi, guy,

I am planning to get a US driver's lisence here, but the DMV staff told me if I take the learner's permit test now, it will expire the same time as my I-94 which is in 21 Oct. I don't know when I am going to get my green card, which means, I can't get a driver's lisence until next year or later! What should I do?

Thanks a lot.

You can get one with a EAD.

Where are you?

We are in California and my husband wasn't even allowed to get a state ID. I have said this already but at the DMV we were told that he could drive with his foreign license and if he gets pulled over tell the officer either he is establishing himself or he is on vacation.

Good luck!

Sarah

Would have been best to get one in Canada befor you moved.

But with AP you can go back and do the test.

Do you have a Canuck DL?

If so, that could perhaps be used as a "tideover".

I'm in VA, and i managed to get one using the NOA1 from my AOS, i had never held a licence before in my life so guess i was lucky

Its only valid for a year but guess thats good enough till my Green card comes through, and i can renew it, i know every state is different but it may be worth checking out.

Hope this helps

It seems to depend state to state. This is what happened in Pennsylvania.

My I-94 expired in June and my AOS was pending.

I went to get my learners permit last Saturday, the guy told me as long as I am married to a US citizen and have his birth certificate, our marriage records, 2 utility bills and my medical sign off from the doctor, I automatically get a 4 year learners permit and can take my actual test whenever I want, not needing any credits.

Best thing to do is check with your state DMV.

10 year Green Card received, Next step is citizenship urgh!

When you meet the one you want to spend the rest of your life with,

you can't wait for the rest of your life to begin

I can only speak for GA. They would not let me have one because my I-94 was expiring very soon. Of course, it took almost this amount of time to get a SSN. They told me I could only drive on my NS license for 30 days after I got there. They told me to get an International Driving Permit from AAA, and when I called AAA they said there was no such thing to allow someone to drive in the US. Only overseas. They told me I would have to come back when I get my EAD. So, Saturday I'm going to go after it :)

IDP is just a translation of your Canadian license, but as I am assuming that is in English you do not need it.

You would get it from the AA/RAC/AAA whatever is the Candian equivalent, but like I say a waste of time.

You may not be resident for DMV purposes, that is how it appears in CO, residency varies depending on who you deal with.

From a practical point of view as comes up regularly with Illegals involved in car related fatalities, the Police always say that they can not check when the start date was so can not tell whether you are in or out.

The head of Denver police also amusing quoted the wrong time period, he said 30 days for new residents, it is 90 days.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Cool. I am in VA too and I was wondering about what evidence I needed to bring to the DMV. I got a driver's license at the DMV there, but it expired at the same time my I-94 expired, and I wasn't sure whether they would accept the AOS NOA1 to renew my license.
