theoretically i'm going to get an EAD before green card, therefore i will have a SSN sooner also. if i was to start to school before i get the GC, will they count me as in international student and therefore charge me out of the ####### (excuse my language) and not qualify for any scholarships?

has anyone had any experience with this?

That is great news! If I am correct,it is better to do the EAD and GC all at the sametime. It is just one fee of about $900+ which include AOS and EAD. If i am correct the EAD costs $350 which takes about 3 months anyways. I might be mistaken but alot suggested get them both done at the sametime. Well, Good Luck!

i havent gotten anything yet, but seeing as most people are getting their EAD's before the GC's, thats why i asked.. i am filing for both AOS and EAD at the same time, i just wanted to know if with EAD alon i will be considered an international student or not.

but thanks for your input anyways!

p.s. we are hoping to send the package off in the middle of the January. i am so impatient ahah. i've just been waiting to finally start a normal life for so long, 3 to 4 months feels like forever lol.

It is state-dependent. In most cases you will probably at least be classified as an out-of-state resident for tuition purposes, possibly an international student, without proof you are a permanent resident. In some cases even with the GC you may still be classified as out of state for a period of time. Best to contact your school of choice and ask.

I feel you. My husband ended up just waiting for his green card, because with the EAD they were going to charge him the international rate, but as a permanent resident spouse of a state resident, they gave him the in-state rate with no waiting period once he got his green card. Not to mention the financial aid thing.

I hope it works out for you so you can start soon, though. Which state are you in?

You're lucky. When I went to U of Louisville some of my friends that lived all their life in KY found cheap housing across the Ohio river in Indiana. After a few months the school told them they would be charged out of state tuition because they were now living across the river, also a 5 minute drive!
