Ereshkigal,

I have a problem with this part of your question, "so many people going about this process legally and get denied".

- Recognize that going about the process legally and being qualified to immigrate are two different things.

- I'm not sure I agree that many of the people going about the process legally are being denied. Some may have to go to great lengths to demonstrate that they qualify for immigration. I think that very few who are qualified ultimately are denied. Most denials - and I believe there are relatively few - are appropriate under the law.

I am writing an essay for a class of mine and the subject matter is -Giving A Path Of Citizenship To Illegal Immigrants-. I am curious what people's opinions are on this subject. Do you feel it would be unfair to reward illegal behavior while there are so many people going about this process legally and get denied or how do you feel? Any responses would be appreciated. Thanks

Very good point. I wasn't thinking about that. I should have phrased the question more along the lines of... How do you feel about our govt. giving a path of citizenship to illegal immigrants when all of you are going about it the legal way... or something along those lines.

it is definitely phrased 'smoother'. not sure if the response would be different though. ^_^

my opinion only...1st of all, why is there so many illegal immigrants in the USA? because the path to legal immigration is very discriminatory and long for some people. so, for example, if you are a doctor from india with a PH.D. degree, you will have no problem getting a visa to come here in relatively short time. but,if you are a migrant worker from mexico, forget it, you'll be waiting over ten years or much longer. but that mexican worker want freedom and opportunity just as much as anybody does, maybe more. so he must illegally cross into the USA for his chance at living the life he dreams for himself and his family. now, I am not for amnesty, but what i am for is a complete overhaul of the US immigration process so that it is fast, fair, and non-discriminatory. we have room in this country for everyone that wants to come here legally. it should be apply, do a background check, visa issued, welcome to the USA! with the computers and databases they have nowadays it should not take anyone more than 6 months to get a visa of any category. just my opinion. i am very pro-immigration

If only it could be so simple right? I don't think it ever will be though. I like your positive attitude though. :D

apparently I need to get some sleep b/c I just remembered why I phrased the question that way to begin with... I'm not sure how many people who apply legally are denied either but the point is that they at least tried to go about it legally even if they werent qualified by govt. standards instead of just somehow coming in illegally.

Immigration should not be about "the immigrant". It is not about bestowing masses of immigrants (legal or otherwise) "a better life" to the detriment of the America and a majority American citizens. It is about the benefit the immigrant brings to the host nation as a whole. And it is not about the benefit that the immigrant brings to themselves or a select few at the expense of current citizens or for narrow self-serving interests.

...

yeah yeah, it ain't pretty and ain't fair, boo hoo... get on with your life, maybe we institute some form of legalizing the workforce that wants to come and is needed. maybe we don't. but do not fret over the well being of this nation because of illegal immigrants.

Sounds like the same old same old... The fact is this is my country and this sh!t affects my life. I have a right to my opinion without your usual personal cheap shot attacks when the truth hits hard.

I really do believe it is detrimental when ingrained institutional corruption becomes a way of life in my country and I refuse to just "get on with my life" when it is so obvious. Illegal immigration of the scale it has degenerated to didn't happen in a vacuum.

Do you think I'm the only one who "frets"? This has become a much wider issue for this entire country as the situation has degenerated to its present level. It is no longer just a border state issue anymore. It has degenerated to every corner of the country, but the border states (like mine) are affected the hardest.

It is a waste of time to get the illegal alien cheerleading squad on VJ to see another view. It doesn't really surprise me from reading the reams of anti-American diatribes here. But, everyone has a right to their opinion. Right?

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

pj,

of course you have a right to an opinion. as much as right as I have to one too. and fyi, this is my country as much it is yours. the difference between your opinion and mine is that I base mine on a cooler look at the situation. i do not get all emotional about it. i know you do by the words you use. you've concluded that the situation has degenerated this country. i, on the other hand, see a strong, vibrant, and beautiful country made so by the vast mixture of God's children (no offense to my atheist bro's & sis. :P ) .

I hope you can lead a happy and prosperous life peejay despite the degenarated state of this country. I really do.

There might be a lot of reasons somebody here is ilegal.

However, they should go thru the same procedure just like everyone.

I don't even understand how those ilegal immigrants were not embarrassed about themselves but walked out on the street to ask for legal status. If I were them, I'd hide and try to resolve it in a legal way.

Surly I feel bad for those kids brought to the US ilegally. They didn't know anything, and it wasn't their fault. Perhaps there should be a solution for them, not their parents though.

I was mad because my tuition each semester was $5000 or more.

Why the heck the illegals can pay the in-state tuition

I was also mad because I was going to school for a meeting, but they blocked the main road so I was late.

Once a friend from Brazil said "Why don't I just swim from Cuba into USA then I can save myself a lot of moeny on tuition and plane tickets."

Surly sounds reasonable, doesn't it.
