Customs is usually at point of leaving your home country. But some have been checked again at point of entry of US. So could be either or, depending on your country.

At one time from canada, you went through customs at your arrival destination... now its before you leave Canada at airport. This way, your not already in states to cause the mess

of having to go all the way back.

There are only a few countries where US customs has preclearance stations. Canada is one of them. Most people will go through customs when they arrive in the US.

To the OP. I had a previous visa denial, and a border denial and it did not affect my K-1 at all. The point of it is that you are doing it the "right" way by showing them you have filed/are on the K-1 and as long as you're telling the truth, you have nothing to worry about. That being said, true, a K-1 is NOT free pass, and I understand how nervous you can get even if you've done nothing wrong. when they deny you, it makes you feel like a criminal especially if it involves a long interrogation. After being denied, I spent almost a year being terrified to try and cross the border, so I started taking yoga which really helped me to control my nerves with nice long deep breaths. When I did finally cross to visit, I brought LOTs of ties, and the most important was a round trip ticket, and my pay stubs from the last year or so plus a bank statement showing my spending history in Canada. When crossing with the K-1, I assumed that time, and every time before that, they had all information on me, and as soon as they ask me about it, I just smile and tell them it was my error and everything was fine. If you have all your papers in order and you are organized, friendly in confident, it helps to put them at ease I think. You'll be fine. :)

My access to the US got denied once because I lied about my relationship at that time. I told the Officer that we were just friends, went to secondairy inspection and they found stuff in my suitcase that indicates that he was more than just a friend  .

They put me back on the airplane, under supervision of two police officers, back to the Netherlands (no BAN, thank God!), and I had to apply for B2 Visa. I did, passed interview and flew to the US couple times after. Lots of questioning, showed them that I have had enough proof to my home country, a job, NOA1 and NOA2, and a return ticket :innocent: .

However, Aaron joined my K1 interview just in case. They questioned me a lot about my denied entry. Thankful we passed and we flew to the US 2 weeks after. At my POE, they were very sceptic and I was honest in any single way as of I could be. I was defending myself after, telling them that I went to a lot of emotional times, worked hard for my B2 and didnt have any problems after :hehe:

Now I am happily married, and in the US.
