Hi Everyone

This is my first post over in the AOS board after K-1 approval :) a little excited about it too. My question is How did you apply for a Social Security number for your spouse? I have read the instructions but I really want to hear from people who have experienced it before. What was it like what did you bring?

We went together and brought the following:

Original birth certificate

Passport with K-1 Visa and stamped I-94

Kenyan Photo ID

SSN Application

We were in and out in about 15 minutes...it was relatively painless...received Social Security card about 2 1/2 weeks later. It's easy compared to everything else we go through, lol. Good luck with everything and be blessed!

it is that simple if you are still within the window of opportunity. i think its within 6 weeks of entry. after that, the k1 visa is not valid for long enough to get you the social security card and you have to wait til after married. good luck!

False information here.

The K-1 is a one time entry visa and is cancelled at the border and replaced with a I-94 valid for 90 days.

One should wait about 2-3 weeks after entry for your entry to filter through the system to the SSA's computers. Then you can apply at any time within the validity of the I-94. Waiting until that last day is not advised.

Actually THIS is false information. You should apply after 10 days (to ensure you're in the SAVE system) and then you must apply before day 76 of your I-94 validity or they will not approve a SSN.
