How are chicken able to lay eggs every day?

I have never heard of balut before - that's really gross.

Even if a hen did lay a fertilized egg it would be taken away from the hen too quickly. The embryo will not develop if not kept warm.

I had to have a similar conversation with my 9yo daughter just the other week - the girl chicken needs a boyfriend to make a baby chicken!!!

It has a hard flat calcium thing in the middle of it. Pull that out, pop it in your mouth and chew it up!! Not really that bad if you can get over how it looks.

Incidentally, mammals (including humans) lay eggs on a regular basis. You just don't see it/them and you can't eat it/them. Well, I guess you could but it probably isn't worth the effort.

At any rate, the presence of a male is not necessary for egg-laying... it will happen regardless. In factory-farming, the "days" are artificially shortened using lights to get the hens to lay more often than every 24 hours. That, and the conditions in which they are housed, mean life sucks and then you die (for the hens). Good reason to spend a little more for free-range, imho.

Plus free-range eggs tend to taste better (as do free-range chickens).

In some countries (such as India), the bulk of chickens sold by butcher-shops are free-range.
