Traveling to China with a I-131 travel document

Hello,

Trying to figure out if I can visit China with a US I-131 Travel Document without passport of another nation. Most people in the visa offices don't seem to come across these, but I see no reason why I wouldn't be able to. Could anyone provide some insight?

What do you mean by "without a passport of another nation"?

You have to have a passport to travel internationally.. Greencard does not replace your passport. where are you from?

Also, if you have a GC, you do not need the AP travel document anymore. But you do need a passport.

Not true, you can travel internationally on the I-131 document without a passport, it acts to substitute a passport. I'm originally from Ukraine, but am technically stateless with no citizenship of any nation.

The travel document looks just like a passport, has visa pages and such...I know for a fact I can travel with this internationally, just need to know if I can go to China with it.

My apologies, I didn't realize you were talking about a refugee travel document - I was automatically thinking about a regular AP. Sorry about that.

Unfortunately cannot help with the China part though. Hopefully someone will have information or experience about that.

I-131 is an application for various types of travel documents. Not all I-131 applications result in a travel document that serves as a passport. You use the same form to apply for Advance Parole, Re-entry Permit, or a Refugee Travel Document.

You have a Refugee Document. I have tried to search and I cannot determine if that document is good for travel to China. Each country has the right to accept or to not accept that document in lieu of a passport. It seems you would need a visa to China, so I would apply for a visa and see what happens, or the embassy might be able to tell you up front. Good luck.

Are you near a city with a Chinese consulate? Consulates often deal with visa processing, so you might be able to go down there with your documentation and speak to someone. If not, I'd try phoning the consulate or the embassy of China and asking.

Thanks for the info. Couldn't get in touch with the consulate, but went to the local satellite visa office. The office called someone and they were unsure if the document would be acceptable. They went again and took my application and would let me know in the next couple of days once the consulate has my app.
