Obesity report offers solutions to global crisis

Based on trends, half of the adults in the United States will be obese by 2030 unless the government makes changing the food environment a policy priority, according to a report on the international obesity crisis in the British medical journal the Lancet.

Those changes include making healthful foods cheaper and less-healthful foods more expensive largely through tax strategies, the report said. Changes in the way foods are marketed would also be called for, among many other measures.

A team of international public-health experts argued that the global obesity crisis will continue to grow worse and add substantial burdens to health-care systems and economies unless governments, international agencies and other major institutions take action to monitor, prevent and control the problem.

Changes over the past century in the way food is made and marketed have contributed to the creation of an "obesogenic" environment in which personal willpower and efforts to maintain a healthful weight are largely impossible, the report, released Thursday, noted.

It also laid out a new way of calculating how many calories to cut to lose weight, giving what it said is a more accurate means of estimating projected weight loss over time.

The common weight-loss wisdom is that reducing calorie intake by about 500 calories a day "will result in slow and steady weight loss of about 0.5 kg (about a pound) per week." That rule doesn't take into account the way the body adapts to the change. In particular, as anyone who has actually lost weight can attest, the less you weigh, the fewer calories you can consume if you wish to lose more weight or maintain the loss.

The report said that weight loss should be viewed over a longer period of time and proposed a new "approximate rule of thumb" for an average overweight adult. It said that "every change of energy intake of (about 24 calories) per day will lead to an eventual bodyweight change of about 1 kg (just over two pounds) . . . with half of the weight change being achieved in about 1 year and 95 percent of the weight change in about 3 years."

Though the report acknowledged that it's ultimately up to individuals to decide what to eat and how to live their lives, it maintained that governments have largely abdicated the responsibility for addressing obesity to individuals, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations. Yet the obesity epidemic will not be reversed without government leadership, regulation and investment in programs, monitoring and research, it said.

Sure. Lets just allow the cereal companies to sell crack-coated cereal marketed to young children. What better way to prepare them for a life of consumer addiction?

AMISH YOUTH ACTIVITY, OBESITY COMPARED TO YOUTH IN MODERN SOCIETY

Old Order Amish Youth Very Active, Rarely Overweight

INDIANAPOLIS – A new investigation of a rural, Old Order Amish community shows Amish children have higher physical activity levels and lower rates of obesity when compared to children living in a modern, industrialized society. The study offers a compelling look at the prevalence of childhood obesity among children who, by lifestyle, are more active and do not utilize modern technology, including television, video games, or computers. The study is published in the March issue of Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise®, the official scientific journal of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

“This Old Order Amish community provides a glimpse at what may be possible, even required, if physical activity were not engineered out of so many daily tasks,” said David R. Bassett, Jr., Ph.D., FACSM, the study’s lead author. “Based on our results, it’s fair to say that advances in modern technology are contributing to the current obesity epidemic. Although it would be impractical to mimic the Amish lifestyle, this study suggests that increased levels of physical activity could mitigate some of the health problems caused by sedentary habits.”

Like a previous study on Amish adults, 139 children and adolescents (6-18 years of age) in a southern Ontario farming community wore sealed step counters and logged their physical activities for seven days. Body mass index was computed for each child, using their measured height and weight. Children were told not to modify their activities, and also were asked to record several activities they had participated in that day.

The results indicate:

• Obesity is rare in Amish youth. Only 7.2 percent of the Amish children were overweight; with only 1.4 percent obese. Approximately 25 percent of American and Canadian children in the same age categories are overweight. Likewise, American children’s obesity rates are 6.5-9.5 percent for boys and 6.6-11.7 percent for girls

• Physical activity is significantly higher in Amish youth. Amish boys averaged 19,400 steps per day over four weekdays; Amish girls averaged 15,300. In modern U.S. elementary school children, pedometer counts were lower, at approximately 12,000 steps per day.

In their activity logs, Amish children reported daily chores requiring considerable physical activity, including milking, gardening, feeding farm animals, and carrying wood. Additionally, most Amish children walked to school, even in inclement weather. During the school day, two scheduled recesses and one lunch hour were spent outdoors.

“The high levels of physical activity and low prevalence of overweight and obesity in these Amish youth are striking,” said Bassett. “From that perspective, modern conveniences in contemporary society may contribute to health problems down the road.”

Yes children should be free to eat crack cereal. The mechanisms of supply and demand will weed out the chaffe from the wheat.

Among the recent studies that support the premise that Americans' sedentary lifestyles have precipitated the obesity epidemic is research that examined the diets of an Amish community in Ontario, Canada. In "Physical Activity in an Old Order Amish Community" (Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, vol. 36, no. 1, January 2004), researchers described the "Amish paradox—" that despite a diet that is high in fat, calories, and refined sugar, the Amish community had a scant 4% obesity rate, compared to 31% in the general U.S. population. Exercise science researcher David Bassett and his colleagues chose this particular Amish population because it has rejected technological advances such as automobiles and electricity, and its physically demanding lifestyle is in many ways comparable to the way Americans lived 150 years ago.

ding ding ding, you just won the dumb post of the day award!

Cereal companies have been advertising to young kids for decades now. Hell, when I was a kid, we actually got decent little toys in the box with the cereal.

Our generation wasn't fat though as kids. Why? Parents told their kids to get outside and play. Parents didn't let McDonalds raise their children. Parents actually were RESPONSIBLE.

You are seriously deluded if you think government needs to stop companies from advertising to certain markets. It's not the advertisers. It's the parents.

Hold on. You always keep bitchin' and whinin' about government overspending and how it's ruining fat cats and wrecking the economy. What do suppose is going to happen when all these kiddiez stop having heart attacks at 20, who's going to end up paying for it? Don't bother with the idea that we won't pay for it, when they end up in the ER, we will. I believe in personal responsibility but I don't advocate selling cigarettes and Jack Daniels to the average 10 y/o. Maybe we should make more health and fitness classes MANDATORY (i.e. cough up the cash) as a preventative measure so that we all don't up going broke with these kidz.

Hence forth the legal drinking age has just been lowered to 6 and no one under the age of 5 will be allowed to purchase cigarettes.

The parents are negligent and now we have to pick up the pieces, cereals are designing to hook the kiddiez. It's incredibly hard for adults, who can make informed decisions, what about the little ones who get hooked on all that #######? Regulation is only one part of an overall strategy, I don't want to be subsidizing some 500lb. teenager who needs a by-pass.

Do you even need to ask, I guess that makes you a sheep. As for market conditions, if they be wanting to die, they should die and thus decrease the surplus population.
