BOSSIER CITY, La. — A south Bossier City homeowners association has sued to force a family to remove a front yard sign supporting their son's military service because it violated subdivision covenants.

The Times reports that the Gardens of Southgate filed the suit this month against Timothy and Jodi Burr, who have lived in the subdivision since 2006. The Burrs placed a large multi-colored banner with a picture of their 20-year-old son, Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Corey Burr, and the phrase "Our son defends our freedom" in January after Corey Burr was deployed to Afghanistan.

Jodi Burr says her family will fight the suit and do not intend to remove the sign.

An attorney representing the association, declined to comment.

The Burrs contend signs supporting a school or team are visible throughout the neighborhood.

This particular HOA is evil. Not all are cut from the same cloth, though. My HOA is excellent. Not overbearing but willing and able to deal with issues that come up. Often, if you want a good home, you have to deal with an HOA. The trick is finding a good one, and there are good ones, for sure.

HOAs are good if you want to find a place where you not going to have junk cars stacking up in yer neighbor's yard. There are various HOAs out there - some are overbearing and too restrictive for my taste. Others - like the one I am part of - do not more than ensure that the subdivision is kept neat and clean. No trash allowed in yards, lawns are to be reasonably maintained and homes are to be kept in good repair. You can't put your car up on blocks and leave it sit there for months or years like that. Simple stuff, really, that helps keep the neighborhood nice looking. Common sense stuff one would say but I don't have to travel but a couple of miles or so to see what a neighborhood can end up looking like if everyone gets to do what they want. All it takes is a few hoarding rednecks and the neighborhood goes down to ####### in no time at all.
