q20 bothers me a bit - in many states in the usa, that type of relationship - 'my wife is my niece' is outlawed, proscribed.

Congrats on the approval, regardless !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Every state has different laws about marriage--don't assume anything.

There is a joke about this--insert whatever state or country you like !!

A young couple is getting divorced in {fill in the blank} and their lawyers ask them if they have any more questions before they start signing the documents. They look at each other, and they say "We do have one last question--after we are divorced, will we still be brother and sister??"

Every state has different marriage laws !!

That is correct but a first cousin's daughter is not one's niece. A brother or sister's daughter is a niece, and that is not legal in any US State.

First cousin's child is a first cousin once removed. I'm not aware of any US State that does not allow such a marriage.

ah - so perhaps he was confused with 'my wife is my niece' statement, as she's not his niece, at all.

Correct. The Consular officer understood the relationship prior to the error because the statement that his wife's mother was his first cousin preceded it.

Yeah this is typical in paki culture as they call eachother uncle, aunty, mammi...etc... without it actually being that particular blood relationship.

for example...as my husband's brother (my brother in law) was getting married his fiance kept referring to my father in law as uncle (I call him Dad)and my mother in law as aunty (of cos I call her Ammi) but for a long time I wasn't sure who she was referring and of course as it turns out we were talking about the same people... so it took some time understanding what they call eachother in the familial relationship...to us it is definitely first cousin once removed.

Just as an aside, it's nice the Chinese have precise terms for each relationship. There's even a two-syllable word for my niece to call me, that means "father's older sister's husband".

that's cool!!! LOL here in NC sometimes the elder women ramble on about the familial relationships here and it takes a genius to figure out who they are talking about and decipher the relationshp.... and then you hear them say... "Bless their hearts"... which in real meaning is omg!!

Congratulations. You were well prepared for your interview and it shows. Good luck on your move to the US.
