This was not the case for me. Hubby lives in NORTH CAROLINA, and we were sent through california service center hehe

Not necessarily. In our case, US citizen spouse lives in New Jersey but our case was processed through California Service center (CSC).

April 19, 2011: NOA1

July 8, 2011: Case approved (checked USCIS case status)

July 14, 2011: NOA2 hard copy received

USCIS--> NVC case transfer: 30 days

NVC (40 days to case completion)

August 10, 2011: NVC operator confirms they received the case package

August 16,2011: Case number assigned

August 16,2011: DS-3032 email sent to NVC

August 19,2011: DS-3032 email accepted by NVC

August 19,2011: AOS bill of $88 sent by NVC through email

August 19,2011: AOS bill paid online

August 22,2011: IV bill of $404 received through email

August 22,2011: IV bill paid online

August 23,2011: AOS bill shows PAID status

August 23,2011: Mailed I-864 packet to NVC

August 24,2011: IV bill shows PAID status

September 2,2011: Received IV checklist email from NVC

September 6,2011: Mailed DS-230 package

September 20,2011: Case complete as per NVC operator

Consulate/interview

September 30,2011: Interview date confirmed for Nov 3,2011

October 8,2011; Medical exam

November 3,2011: Interview date: APPROVED!!

Is it done by geographic proximity to me, or do they just load balance?

I would say a combination of the two with more weight given to load balance.

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal
