Hey all,

Just want to ask you guys, afer K1 visa is issued, how long till beneficiary has until he/she has to travel to the US? 3 months? 6 months? I have also heard 4 months before. Does it varies between cases?

Thanks

Doanh

according to the visa reciprocity tables for Vietnam, 6 mos. for a k-1. however, dependent on the age of the medical (if more than six mos. old at time of visa issuance), it could be shorter...

It is typically 6 months, however; this is one of those cases where it is specific to YOU. When your beneficiary recieves the visa there is a valid until date on it. So you fiance(e) MUST enter the US before that date. I will repeat that this is specific to YOUR case, and the embassy YOU are going thru.

Good Luck,

Dave

You heard correct. Our K1 visa had expiration date of 4 months. March 2011 to July 2011. There is a VJ member who had only 1 month expiration date, but it was a CR1. I believe it is based on the medical exam date but not sure of this. Others can provide more information.

Aaah, now it makes sense. We were advised to wait until the last minute before the interview to do the medical, and now I understand why. It is based on the medical because the medical is only good for 6 months. If you do the medical 2 months before your interview, your entry will only be valid for 4 months. Does this track with other's experience?

no, the medical is valid for one year, but must have a minimum validity of 6 mos from day of approval of the visa... so if the medical is 7 month old the the visa will be valid for only 5 mos.

YMMV

No it isn't. The norm now is that the visa is issued with a date that is 6 months from the date of the medical, so the medical is only good for 6 months. We just went through this 2 weeks ago and it has been the same for many members recently. If you wait for 7 months after the medical exam you will get a blue slip at best. What was valid when you got your visa approved isn't the same process now. :bonk:
