We have to purchase material melted in a "qualifying country" for probably 99% of our orders. Why is this kind of thing still around?

I don't know about your products or the reasons behind the requirement, etc - but buying domestic products is a good thing for many reasons.

Out of curiosity, what are you making? And to what level of assembly is this enforced? I mean, your suppliers have suppliers who have suppliers. Is it only the first supplier that has to be from a qualifying country or do they follow the supply chain down? Because unless they follow the supply chain down, it's a meaningless restriction that only serves to increase the price of the end product. And if they follow the supply chain down, the red tape involved is liking ridiculous.

the finished product is made domestically. Finding domestic raw material is difficult sometimes.

I was flat out told by a vendor that the domestic magnesium sources closed so the only options would be mexico or some place in asia.

Right now I'm trying to find a small diameter material. I last bought it in 2008. So far nobody domestic carries this size anymore. If I don't locate a source I'll be between a rock and a hard place real soon.

Have you tried smallparts.com ? Also, I'm sure you have checked or not knowing exactly what you are looking for but there's McMaster Carr and MSC.

Those are all completed products or tools, generally without certifications to prove the material source. We can only purchase from them when the shop needs commercial items.

I'm looking for material to make parts. Material would come from a mill like Valbruna (Italy) or Deutsche-Nickel (Germany) but I'd buy from a distributor or their domestic warehouse.

OK, it's badly organized but they do. Short lengths only. We buy full length bars (12 ft).
