Count me in!

I can't lose my Filipino citizenship otherwise, i can't practice my profession in my country which i worked hard for 12 yrs. The best thing to do is to be a dual citizen, the adverse effect, however, is that i have to pay higher taxes though. I will be taxed both by Phils and America. Oh well...

Nobody can "get dual citizenship."

A citizen of another country can become a US citizen if he or she takes the Oath of Allegiance, swearing off any and all loyalty to their former country of citizenship." That's different form "getting dual citizenship" by a mile. Or two.

Bob actually means the USA do not recognise Dual Citizenship, as he stated about the pledge of allegiance, nothing stopping you holding 2 passports, but in the eyes of the USA you are not a dual citizen.

The US doesn't care if you are dual citizen. They won't recognize your other citizenship, but they won't take away your US citizenship, either.

I'm planning to get dual citizenship sometime within the next few years after I get my 10-year green card. And yes, I know that to the US government, I will be only a US citizen, but to me and for all other purposes, I will be a dual citizen.

What are your reasons for becoming a US/dual citizen? How do you feel about it? I want my dual citizenship to be about more than not having to deal with USCIS any more. The way I look at it, this is the country I live in now, this is the community I contribute to and gain from, and I want to make that commitment more official. As long as I can keep my birth citizenship, that is, which I can. I don't see any conflict in that as I'll be connected with both countries no matter what my citizenship is. But I'm interested in other people's thoughts on this.

You must have a different definition of dual citizenship than I do. If you hold citizenship in two countries simultaneously, you have dual citizenship. I can't imagine what your definition is.

I don't think anyone is intending to imply that you can literally apply for dual citizenship, just that you can apply for citizenship in the US and potentially hold on to citizenship in a different country.

Correct Mark! I just JustBob is taking the words "get dual citizenship" too literally. Because there is no such thing as "applying for dual citizenship" I will be keeping my AUS citizenship and will become a US citizen by way of naturalization, therefore "getting dual citizenship".

hey Vanee, my reasons are the same. i love the US, this is my country now - my home, friends, hubby's family, life, job ...etc is here now. so i do consider the US being home, and feel being a US citizen is the best way to go for me (i agree to making the commitment more official!) and also because my home country Australia lets me keep my citizenship, so i get the best of both countries. Easier on USCIS here too! And also because myself and hubby travels lots, i can use either passport depending on the country - so no visa needed!.... AND...when we finally have kids, my kids will be allowed to obtain the dual citizenship too, therefore allowing them the opportunity to live in either country - something i would have loved to have when i was growing up.
