A Cleveland man was attacked by a housecat Friday afternoon and the man's injuries are so severe that he had to be taken by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

The altercation between the man and the animal occurred at a home on CR 3182 a few miles south of Cleveland in Liberty County.

At some point during the attack, the man and the cat reportedly were injured by a knife the man was holding. The man was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center before being transported to Houston.

Game wardens Danny Diaz and Adam Broll captured the cat. It was taken to Big Thicket Animal Hospital for examination.

The man's identity is unknown at this time.

Moderator's hat off now. .

I have 4 indoor cats, 3 outdoor cats and a colony of ferals I look after. Yes, as mentioned above Savannahs, Ocicats or Bengals have a tendency to revert to a less domesticated stance at times and have been known to get aggressive.

Still, if a domestic cat feels threatened - or expresses re-directed aggression towards a person - injuries can be severe and dangerous. Separating two of mine when they were re-directing aggression caused by an outside cat trying to attack one of them through the window caused me some serious injuries that required medical attention. They weren't trying to attack me but to attack the cat I was separating from the other and damage to me was 'collateral'. It took a long time to get the two brothers back on speaking terms with each other as well.

Cats are creatures of instinct and it is always good to remember that their wild, survival instincts are not far below the surface. It would be interesting to learn the circumstances surrounding this attack. I suspect the man didn't pay any attention to the cat's warning signals - and they do give them before they attack - and caused the cat to feel threatened.

That's OK, the court has ordered the cat to undergo counselling.
