The advantage of Fedex and DHL is that the packages are handled by that company in transit. USPS is a United State operation and will pass your documents off to someone else.

USPS Priority is for domestic only. The Priority International hands off to the foreign postal system. How reliable is the mail getting to where she lives?

That sounds like too much. I sent my docs to Moscow via FedEx for $120 or something..this was 4 weeks ago.

Try looking into the USPS Global Express Guarantee Service. You have to take your package to the post office, but it's passed off to FedEx to handle and deliver. In November I shipped my husband a package which weighed 7 pounds and FedEx said it would cost about $160. I used the Global Express through USPS and it cost me $95 and that was with the 10% discount for processing my shipment online. It was still expensive, but it might be worth trying just to save even a little money. You're still using FedEx, but you're going through the post office initially.

I would suggest checking into how customs in her country handles packages. I had no idea prior to sending it, that customs in the DR takes forever to release packages. My husband was blaming it on FedEx, but FedEx in the DR was waiting on customs to give them the package to deliver. Each time I called FedEx to get an update, the woman in charge was just as frustrated as I was. She said she always has problems with customs in the DR and customs still had packages of people who sent theirs long before I did. It took about 3 weeks before my husband got what I sent. There were absolutely no problems with USPS or FedEx, though. I'd use the service again if I could trust that customs wouldn't be an issue. If you don't run into problems once the package makes it to customs in her country, then it'll be delivered in the same amount of time that it would be if you go directly to FedEx.

Got an online quote last week from Fedex to send some documents to my step daughter. Was NOT 6 lbs, but it was about $92 which included some type of discount because I have a Fedex account (which I never use). This was to Rostov-on-Don.

A document folder is unlikely to be opened, provided it's not too heavy.

Try looking into the USPS Global Express Guarantee Service.

This is the way to go. It is passed off to end-country or private carriers once it leaves the US but every time I've used it, packages have arrived quickly and without anything missing. Cost is about $50 to send a document folder and it'll take about a week.

The real question is what the heck are you sending that weighs more than 5 pounds? I gave my wife copies of the entire petition, more evidence, and the other required documents and I am sure it was not more than a pound or two INCLUDING the 3 ring notebook it was organized in. Fortunately I hand carried it for her interview.

I lived in Odessa for two years. My mother said she sent me a letter every week. I believe her. I got exactly TWO letters in two years. And you are betting what on this? we are waiting for packet 3 to be delivered to our flat in Ukraine three years after her interview. I can virtually guarantee your package will be stolen thinking it is something valuable and end up in someone's trash when they find out it is just paper.

I NEVER, EVER send anything INTO Ukraine by postal service. I also will NEVER EVER again complain about the USPS.

Send it UPS or Fedex and send it for station pickup You can track the package and when it arrives tell her she can go and get it. I went to the interview myself for a little more than sending the documents alone, and brought all the documents myself.

True. Scan and email works for almost anything. You give them copies anyway except the I-134 signed original.

If you send by USPS send it WAY in advance so you have time to recover and send it again when it is not delivered. Call me pessimistic. I was a Boy Scout. Be prepared.
