I had a SS# from coming to the US on a student visa 3 years ago. Now I am here, married, and have applied for a my AOS. I just received my work authorization card yesterday, do I need to go get a new SS card or is my old one automatically activated?

Technically you will have the exact same number (I was a student in the U.S. also), but the wording on the SS card will change. You still have to go to the SS office and get it changed so there are no limitations on it.

SSN# never changes - unless some very specific reasons. For most ppl SSN# is for life name on SSN# can change, but once you get SSN# thats yours until the day you die.

There is no concept of active or need to reactivate either, most likely your old SSN card has line printed on it you cannot work without authorization, but that is fine once you have your EAD and GC that line does not mean anything.

So when you looking for employment produce both your SSN card and EAD or GC to your employeer and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the information. The only reason why I was wondering if the SS# was inactive was because we tried to put the eletric bill in his name when he arrived and when they ran the number through they were saying it was inactive. I know he will have the same SS# for life, just wanted to know if he needed to go down to the office to get a new card, or he can take his old card and his NEW work Authorization card and go get a JOB TODAY:)

You should go to the SSA and get it re-activated and registered as a K1 etc. Can't hurt.

Incorrect. The limitations (I assume you mean "DHS authorization required" on the card) are in place until the OP gets a GC. The EAD doesn't remove them because the EAD IS the DHS authorisation.
