Traveling Green Card and passport different name

This is another reason I am glad Roza decided to keep her maiden name until citizenship--if she changes it then.

Here is my $0.02 on this issue. I agree with Just Bob as the traveler in question is not a USC so a govenment issued ID is the ID of the country of citizenship--i.e. the passport. The GC is only used for re-admission into the US by the LPR. I see this either there will be problems if you get someone on the airline that wants to make your life difficult or there will be no problems. It is up to you as to how you handle this and I wish you the best and I hope there are no problems as international travel is stressful enough without the hasle over a lastname.

The only way to avoid all problems is to book INTERNATIONAL tickets in one's PASSPORT name AND to carry the marriage certificate. In fact, carry the marriage certificate with you at ALL times.

For domestic flights, the green card (or a state driver's license) is quite suitable as identification if one wishes to book the ticket in the married name.

OP, get the ticket changed to the maiden name.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

Hey I have a question along this line.

To prevent getting to this problem of passport and green card being different when we want to travel this is what my Fiancee and I are planning to do:

Have her sign Marriage certificate: Her first name, maiden name, my last name

Apply for SSN: Her first name, maiden name, my last name

Apply for AOS and EAD: Her first name, maiden name, my last name

Go to Philippine Embassey in Wash DC and register our marriage and apply for a new passport with her married name as shown above.

Does anyone see a problem with the order in which we want to do this or in what we want to do?

Thanks

Tony

Yep I do. It is often MUCH easier to first get the SSN BEFORE you get married and get it in the maiden name. So I would change the order to SSN in maiden, marrige cert as you wrote it, AOS as you wrote it and then once you get the GC change the SSN. Will make life a lot easier. Though it's not supposed to be a problem some SSA offices are making it an issue :S

This is a very old post, but I think I need updated info on this... Anyone can offer their comment, please?

I have a name discrepancy on my passport vs my GC...

I was married to a USC when I applied for GC, now when all that was done (thankfully didn't encounter problems), I had to renew my PH passport with my married name (conveniently, it was expired). Apparently the Philippine law states you HAVE to use your old surname as your new middle name, and that's what the PH consulate emphasized when I applied for my new PH passport. I wasn't aware of that when me and my husband signed our marriage registration forms - I didn't move my surname to become my new middle name (I kept my middle name as is).

Here's a representation:

1) Maiden Name: Name MidName Surname
2) Name on GC: Name MidName Surname2
3) Name on Passport: Name Surname Surname2

In hindsight, I know I should've thought of that more, but I'm concerned about my travels from PH back to US (to visit my family in PH) - what do I have to present to the US immigration officers when you re-enter the US, besides the GC? Will they fuss about why my PH passport name is different from my name on the GC?

2013-08-13 - Sent AOS package (I-485/I-765/I-131 for K1; I-485/I-131 for K2)

2013-08-21 - E-notification text & email with case numbers. Receipt date for I-485 was 2013-08-15. Receipt date for I-765 and I-131 was 2013-08-20.

2013-08-24 - Received hard copy NOA1 for K1's I-485, I-765, and I-131. No NOA1 received for K2's I-485 and I-131.

2013-08-30 - Received biometrics appointment letters for 2013-09-13. Sent Request for Rescheduling form to re-reschedule biometrics.

2013-09-04 - Biometrics processing stamp (early walk-in / Infopass)

2013-09-10 - Received a second set of biometrics appointment letters so I sent back copies of our biometrics processing stamps to three offices: Alexandria BPU, NBC, and Vermont Service Center.

2013-09-23 - E-notification: change of Case Status (I-485 K1&K2 ready for interview scheduling)

2013-09-26 - Received a third biometrics appointment letter (to K1 only). Ignored.

2013-10-10 - E-notification: Interview appointment notice for 11/13/13

2013-10-14 - Received hard copy interview letter in the mail

2013-10-18 - E-notification: "name change relating to I-765"; E-notification: 1-131 approved (K1)

2013-10-22 - Received AOS interview cancellation notice by mail

2013-10-23 - E-notification: change of Case Status (I-485 K1&K2 interview cancelled) ; E-notification: I-765 approved; E-notification: 1-131 approved (K2)

The answer's the same: Carrying (and, when asked, presenting) the marriage certificate solves any discrepancy between maiden name on passport and married name on green card.
