Hi all,

The end of September we will have our "Inital Interview" for AOS.

I have read that most interviews go pretty smooth if you bring all that they ask for. But my wife and our two sons from Brasil do not know very good English, in fact very poor at speaking English, so I will be present to help translate at the very least. They are taking ESL classes.

Another thing, I have not added my wife to our bank account / property, the only reason, just to busy. Is this important to do? She does not have a SS # yet so I am wondering (I should just call the bank) if she really needs this to be on my Bank Accounts, ect. We got married before we had tried to file for this and they rejected us because her new name does not match her I-94 even though we had certified Marriage certs. - but that is another story. Is it not enough that we are married, together, and that all of our other docs are correct? If needed I will scramble and get all to include her name. Thanks for any Ideas/ comments that you might have

isleta,

Why do you call it "Initial Interview" - the quotes being yours?

See Chapter 15 of the Adjudicator's Field Manaual here

And paragraph (f ) of Chapter 23, Section 2, here

You will be present, yes, but you may or may not be allowed to act as an interpreter.

I had put quotes on it because on our Notice this is what they called it. Unfortunately I do not have it in front of me but I remember it called an "Inital interview". It states also that she can bring an enterpreter if she does not speak well, so I am just assuming that I can help with the enterpretations but I could be wrong and if she does need to hire an enterpretor then I may have a problem.

I don't think that you will be able to act as an interperator for your wife and I think on the interview checklist it states that maybe I am wrong. While I was at my interview a month ago there were alot of people there with interperators for their interviews. I think that they may not want to have a spouse doing the interperating I would check on that before going for your interview. I think that you can hire someone to go along to the interview if your wife really can't understand or answer questions as they are asked of her. Good luck with it all.

Yeah, it might be worth the time to put your wife on your bank account and anything else. That was one of the first things I did right after my husband and I got married, we were able to do this on a Saturday as most banks are open til about 12 here on that day. It would also be a good thing to get her SSN, whether she is going to work or not. If I am not mistaken, the USCIS is going to want proof of your life together...that would be in the form of joint bank accounts, bills with both your names, her SSN, etc. Just the marriage certificate alone may not be enough proof, strange as that may sound. Good luck getting it all together. :)

Our notice for our interview also says "Initial Interview".

I would take the time to make sure there are things jointly in both names- unless you have life and health insurance already in your wife's name- then I wouldn't be too concerned. You have two children together! We'll be taking our 3 week old baby to the interview as well!!!

See my timeline for all previous dates!

01/22/10: Oath Date

With thanks to all the helpful people who made this journey slightly more bearable.

You are too busy to go and take 5 minutes out to go and fill out some forms and add your wife to your accounts? Sorry to be blunt but in my eyes thats a lame excuse. Your wife needs all the help she can get from you as the AOS interview is probably the most important interview you will do in your life. Documents in both parties names are a requirement and you are setting yourself up for a big disappointment if you think that just solely being married is enough to get you through an interview. If that was the case, don't you think that everyone here on vj would be approved? AOS interviews are smooth if you meet the rquirements, but you should also consider the number of people here who have received RFE's to gather more evidence to support their appeal.

You need to also get a professional body to interpret for your wife as your interview will be terminated if you attempt to interpret. I have read countless cases on vj where the interviewer threatened to remove the spouse who was interpreting at an AOS interview. Perhaps you should look into getting some advice from an immigration attorney.

I agree with collie we just had our aos interview 3 days ago.The most important things were the being able to support not becoming a burden, evidence of being together after you had arrived(letters to the home address, bank accounts in both names, utilitys, auto, insurance policys,etc..Also making sure she had health insurance.Get this stuff Done!!

OK,

Thanks for all the posts - very much appreciated and very much educated. I am just going to take a day off to get all of my sht together and I am going to find an enterpreter. And for those of you that feel you may be a little blunt, no need to apologize as you are correct. Thanks again for your help.
