How does health insurance work for people on a K-1 Visa?

I was wondering how health insurance works for people on a K-1 visa? I know for myself, that once I marry my fiance (he is the usc) I will be sponsered by the airforce and will be covered under the airforce health insurance. But how does it work for people while they are on a K1 visa and before they get their status adjusted? Do they need to buy health insurance from a company in the states? Does travel insurance from their country of origin count? I'm really interested to know and find this out.

Qualitification for health insurance by your spouse is exactly that: spouse. It has nothing to do with visas. It's the marriage status. If you are legally married, then you're covered; not a minute before. So people still awaiting their K-1 (NOT K-3) visas are not legally married yet, so they don't qualify at all for spousal health care coverage.

A lot of USC purchase short-term medical insurance for their fiances when they arrive. It seems to me the responsible thing to do.

Will travel insurance (from their original country) cover the k1 visa holder before they get married?

I am not an expert authority on this subject, but here are my thoughts. I am prior military 22 yrs of service. If you are not married K-1 you are not covered by your USC (military) spouse health insurance. When you do get married K-3 then and only then are you able to get coverage from your USC (military) health insurance, and even then it is not done automatically. Your spouse will have to first get you a dependent military ID Card. Once he gets you an ID card he can then sign you up into the DEERS program http://www.military.com/benefits/tricare/d...eporting-system which is how you get enroll on his military health insurance call TRICARE http://www.military.com/benefits/tricare. You can however purchase a seperate personal insurance that covers your health prior to your getting married if you are concerned about traveling without insurance. I would suggest you goggle travel health insurance and get information on the different types of coverage. I hope this information is helpful to you.

here is what i plan to do: i still have a travel insurance from my home country, it covers me for up to 6 weeks. I hope to be married and covered by my fiance's insurance within those 6 weeks. this way I think I will not have a gap.

This is just my plan but those suggestions above (getting a short term insurance in the US) sound really good to me as well. I guess you just have to collect a few offers and then just sign up for something.

in general i think it is better to avoid any gaps when it comes to health insurance, although i have heard from people who went without for a while.

Many companies have partner benefits which are not dependent on the marital status at all.

Ok sounds good - I'm near when I renew my annual travel insurance and I can get some which cover me for 120 days at a time for my annual insurance at a pretty cheap rate - so i was checking if that would be acceptable

Travel insurance is NOT valid when you travel on a K1 visa. Anyone who sells you insurance and says it is valid is getting you in a whole lotta trouble if you get sick. Travel insurance is for people who intend to return to their home country. Obviously on a K1 you do not intend to return. If you get really sick, most travel insurances will fly you home as it's cheaper to get treated in your own country. If you get sent home, then you're in some hot water with your visa and status.

I don't think life insurance will help pay for your healthcare. And you don't need to buy a year's worth of health insurance. Most companies will do it on a month by month basis. The search facility on this site, and google are your friends here :thumbs:
