It is a good idea to update SocSec Admin so they can mail you a new SS-card with employment restriction indication removed (if you change your name, it is necessary so it updates to new name).

For DL, it should also be done so as to get the DL updated.

Inform SSA of status change.

Nothing to do about DL, unless you live in a state that offer's an enhanced DL, for example NY State, in NY you can provide citizenship evidence, and get a notation place on it that you are a US citizen for $30, this allows border crossing into and out of Canada and Mexico without having to carry a US Passport.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Update Social Security.

Notify the DMV.

Update your I-9 at work, if necessary.

And lastly, renew your passport.

Do this last because it requires sending in your original certificate of naturalization. they send it back with your passport.

Save all of your immigration paperwork for at least 2-5 years, just in case [No matter how much you want to have a big USCIS bonfire! :)]

Aannnd that's it. Once you get your passport and certificate of naturalization back, you're done! :).

No need to inform DMV, a DL is a DL.

As I indicated, in some states you can upgrade DL to an "Enhanced DL" it is optional.

Some credit card companies have in their records (and your profile) that you are a "resident alien" (if you are a green card holder). It is probably a good idea to update them as well that you are now a US Citizen.

Not sure about the other stuff, but it doesn't hurt to check with your local SS office, DMV, etc.

Here's all you need to know in detail:

http://www.newcitizen.us/after.html

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

The DMV (or BMV in some states) has to confirm your legal status before issuing a driver's license to you.

When I was still a permanent resident, the DMV personnel had to make a phone call with my I-551 card in her hand to confirm my status before giving me my license.

I think you should inform the SSA of the change of your status no matter how look alike your current SS card is to that of a citizen.

Since my wifes' employer can be fined $16,300.00 by the state for hiring an illegal, they kept very close watch on her in that her green card was up to date. I can't even begin to tell you the problems we had in trying to explain to them when I don't even know the reason, why she had an expired green card with a one year extension notice. With my help and the internet, had to show them this is the way the USCIS operates and indeed she was here legally.

So the very first thing she did when she got her US citizen certificate was to bring that into their legal department. They looked it over very carefully, made a photocopy of it, put that in her records, and took her off their watch list. That was the single most greatest feeling she had about getting her US citizenship. Also that heavy chain tied to her ankle dragging that green card was finally removed. So how come she doesn't have to drag around her certificate of US citizenship? We don't question that.

For voting and the DMV, they didn't even want to see her certificate, just told her to check that I am a US citizen box. Got me to wonder if they really check on that or not.

SS trusted a very low at the bottom worker to look at her certificate, say it was valid, and make a photocopy of it handing me her certificate back. Made sure he washed his hands first before touching it. But apparently the DOS don't trust their highly certified passport agents to do the same thing, have to send that in so perhaps another bottom of the ladder person looks at it. But they do trust their agents in that you have taken an oath to tell nothing but the truth, your photos are of you, and you indeed did sign the application in the presence of that agent.

When you pay extra, your certificate is placed in a cardboard envelop that is traceable by the post office and even insured and has to be signed for. But then the DOS sends it back in a cheap envelop, no warnings about bending, and just a first class stamp on it. And completely untraceable.

You quickly get the idea you are dealing with a bunch of idiots, but you don't dare say or even think that, as you are just hurting yourself. Just say yes sir, no sir, no excuse sir, our military taught me that. And also completely forget about the first amendment, even though you had to study about that to pass the civics test.
