Soon after arriving here my wife and I had dinner with one of my co-workers. He made a very rude and uncalled for comment to her trying to be funny. We it wasn't funny to my wife or I and I let him know that. There was a quick appology and no further comments of that type from him. We have had other comments made that could be taken as rude, but we prefer to take them as jealous comments. . . We really don't let other peoples problems become our problems. If someone who is supposed to be a friend has such a small mind as to say such ####### then how good of a friend are they really? For the most part Americans will be interested in talking with you to learn of your experiences and what things were really like in Russia, as opposed to what the media has put out. You will enjoy it and make some good friends, just don't let the idiots get to you, they are everywhere, in every country. Have a great journey.

No longer in the hands of the USCIS, for my wife at least, next up MIL.

Agreed your fiance really shouldn't be letting anyone make you feel like that...friend or family.

mckay76, he defends me, really. I can't wish better husband. But he can't be everywhere. I must find friends and work. And I'll talk to people in the supermarket, schools and so on. Relative, acquaintances, colleagues. Not everybody will like you, as always. But in russia nobody tells you "from the mother russia" and laughs in your face.

You can't defend your fiancee from the world. And word full of idiots, as we know

Actually when I told him what I feel, he was really upset. But we're very happy despite all obstacles.

Mostly worried cos of visa.

He has german mom. I'd make joke about that but it would sound lame. If I'll ask him in russian, he'll say "babushka, babushka" idiot.:D I don't care about him at all.

Yep, I just wondered how many people like that I'm ging to meet. And what is remarkable in that story. Everybody knew, that guy is making jokes. But when I talked back, everybody said "Elena you're harsh".

When we were in italy, I noticed the same. Italians can be mean toward you, but if you're mean toward them you're "russian, they all like that"

Same staff I heard from US relatives. "we're not going to Russia, we scared, they supply Iraq with weapon, they hate americans"

Well I don't really know exactly, if we supply or not. I never supplied, I can't write Iraq's address on arabian right to send them weapon.

Call him "dedushka", who cares

There are a few stupid people in the US, but there are some everywhere in the world. thank God there are nice people also. In august 2008 some people were giving me a hard time, because Russia had this thing with Georgia, and the most interesting thing about it is that most of those people didn't even know before that such country as Georgia existed. The good part is that there were always some people around, better educated and a lot nicer, who would stand up for me.

About Iraq and stuff like that... well, there are millions of people in Russia, who think that the USA supply Chechen terrorists, it doesn't mean that it's nessesarily true. You can try explaining that to them.

In fact one my russian friend, girl got married italean man and his mom thought "russians eat kids" :D

Yes, we do. I just had one for dinner  (just kidding). Sometimes, i would just say yes to everything they're saying. Why disappoint people? A lot depends on the mood though.

The easiest thing to do is just not talk to such people, but, i understand it's hard when your fiance's family and friends are like that, but in that case really - he should do something about that.

Call him "dedushka", who cares

Well, when his cat died, he told his little daighter "kiss your cat good bye"

So after a couple "babushka" I told him "You're a dead cat's kisser". It's why everybody told that "Elena is harsh".

...this thing with Georgia...

I was in Malta this time and I saw news papers, all was like "Russia attacked Georgia". I was like "What???" And it all was only cheap promotion. But they made people think that russia is aggressive. Yes, here some people at my work tell that americans are stupid, knowing I have american husband. Sometimes I fight, tell them "yep, guys you see it better from here". But sometimes I don't care. They are idiots.

Yes, we do. I just had one for dinner

I have some good receipts to make kids, they are better with tomato. Will send you, its my granma's old receipt

I feel sorry that these low-lifes are some if your fiance's friends and family. I personally would have no bother with this type of person; if you can't say anything nice don't say it at all. My wife doesnt have to endure anything like this because I'd either knock their block off or just not associate with this typeof person. I sure hope ypurfiance us defending you from all this ridicule? If not then I'll just attribute that to that he is just young and stupid.

You are who you are. You are the one with greater courage than any of these people all put together; nine of them could do what you are doing. Not One.

You define who you are and how you live your life; nit what others think of you. Let your actions define you and never lower yourself to this level.

Other than the occasional jerk, Alla has not had any such trouble. NONE of my family, acquaintances or friends would say a bad word to her or about her.

There are ignorant people everywhere and if we talk about them...well. But who cares? She has been asked if she was "french" because in this area if you have a foreign accent they take you to be a French-Canadian (if they don't know any better) She has been asked if she is a refugee and if her husband was a refugee. But these people have no affect on our lives, so who cares? We are doing great, we are happy, Alla is doing well with her classes and working her small job as a translator/interpreter which she is very happy doing.

And I second it that virtually everyone you meet will be very interested in you and what you think of our country and will want to hear all about the real Russia......and they should hear how alike we are in how we live our lives and love our family, etc.

I know that my wife was/is constantly "reporting" back to her friends and family on what she saw and what we were doing.....things like seeing families out and about, with many fathers along with the family, how mani kids and the apparent income level versus the number of kids, what the wear, what the do for enjoyment , where they shop.

Folks in Russia have also bee "brain-washed" into what the typical American is like. I am proud to state that Alla's reports back home were very contrary to the programming .

You are nervous and you should be. My Alla would be happy to call you now or when you are hear to just talk and relate. She dies that now with both personal friends who are here and visa friends who she has met along our journey.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

Thanks for comment, belinda63. (F)

You're right. I just don't like to be rude with people, it's hard for me. And I was just transported to my childhood when boys lathed because of my pimple B-)

And now I'm 26, educated and working. And it is weird for me that some could be like that with me. And I'm not in the us yet. I do some mistakes when I talk, but It's my second language already and I want to learn third.

No offense but your fiance sounds like he has no balls. If someone was cracking on my wife like that about her accent or where she came from I would ask them politely to shut up. Second time I would see them to the door and tell them not to contact me until they found some class. Third time I would knock them on their #######.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I think people that know me know the progression well enough that they would never do such a thing. I can honestly say no one ever has.

Only one instance of someone really trying to be a jerk with her in regards to where she's from and her accent was one of my brothers co workers. I asked him to knock it off and he did. Other than that....just a few subtle comments due to ignorance and jealousy from my sisters.

Any other cracks were made to me with her not around...such as "where can buy me a wife like that". From co workers and friends so I just laugh and shrug it off.

I have one sister that would do the same if she had the brains to match her but it is like someone bringing a knife to a gun fight. But she is of the "poor, poor refugee" ilk, not the "make fun of how they talk" genre.

If someone asked me about where they can buy a wife like that I would say "YOU...can't"

As for the situation with Georgia, there were people, who would just aske me if my family and friends lived anywhere close to the border and when I said "no", they would just say "good" and they never talked about this stupid stuff the media was telling. I'm not saying that Russian media is doing better, but I can't say that I know many people in Russia, who actually believe what they see on TV.

As for my American fiance, the first question some people aske me is "Is he old?". Yeah, you're right. Unbelievably old - he's turning 25 in March  But even if he was, who cares? Like girls in Russia never date Russian guys, who are 20 years older than them...

I have some good receipts to make kids, they are better with tomato. Will send you, its my granma's old receipt

Thanks a lot  I was looking for some new recipes
