Congrats, OBX. I don't know on what though. I guess on being alive.

Congrats, Loto, on being able to wait patiently for your coffee table or whatever other pretentious furniture you are waiting on.

Congrats, Deb.

Congrats, earth, for surviving another day without blowing yourself up.

Congrats me, for having a view outside at work.

Still patiently waiting - cocktail table and 2 side tables are out of stock and re-scheduled the delivery on Apr 25th. Made the payment on Mar 5th, but I am unable to keep my #######tail glass still on it :crying: Useless store!

Anyway, good thing is that today is our little one's b'day and we are celebrating it outside, in a restaurant!

Congrats Indigo for viewing outside

Now it is your turn to congratulate me for making 25% ROR in just 5 min! Normally I lose, but I gained this time! As part of Atlantic City visit, I bought the chips for $100 and put $25 in black of the roulette. In the first attempt itself, it doubled. So, I stopped it and exchanged the chips for cash  Am I a gambling addict? No, never! I don't gamble much!

Loto

"Incidently" - It's a good one, Deb :star:

He will find it out soon. Keep trying. Now, the job market is not as good as some 5 years back, but the unemployment rate is slowly coming down. (Would the number really count? Or say unemployment is 20%, but we have jobs, so it doesn't matter )

It depends on what type of job he is seeking. For technical jobs, dice, monster etc. are good. For general, I think careerbuilder.com is ok. Also, shortlist some few companies and post the resume directly to their websites. Check out the Sunday newspapers for local jobs as well. A minor certification course in his area of interest might also help, because they might have some job fair in the campus. Good luck!

Happy birthday to your little one, Loto. :)

I went to Atlantic City once also. Walked in with $20. Came out with $22. Like a boss. Quit while you are ahead as momma always says.

I heard on NPR that there are currently at least 3 million job opening in America. These posts are open because there aren't enough qualified people or qualified people aren't willing to move. Take me for example. I'm sitting in my city with my current job. If I would only move, I could be making at least 50% more. But my life is here, with my family. I hope those jobs will come here instead of going there.

Checkout dice.com for a lot of IT related job that are open. Deb, what is your husband qualified in? Where do you live? I might be able to traverse through my LinkedIN network and get you in touch with someone. Maybe. Until he can find a job in his field(s), he can always flip burgers. I know a chemical engineer who flips my burger. Because he pretty much has to restudy everything in America to get a certificate/license to do what he would do if he was still residing in Bangladesh. That is work for the government's food safety council.

He's an environmental and aquaculture scientist by profession. In Nigeria, he had a government job with the Nigerian Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research. He also had - and is still a principal in - an environmental consulting firm bidding and carrying out government contracts.

I live on Long Island, New York and, despite being surrounded by water, there is no call for his skills here.

He's decided to get a fast-track teaching certificate to teach earth science/environmental science/oceanography science in public high schools based on his education and work experience. The certificate is issued through a State teaching program, but the program doesn't start registration again until the Fall and that's not even a guarantee that he'll get in. So, meanwhile, he's been applying to anything and everything but - nothing yet.

He's very science-oriented but not sure what else that can translate to.

Ok, now somewhat different topic :star:

I had lost lot of money in stocks back in 2000 - 2003 period  Now I recuperated from it :star:

I am thinking to come back to the stock market again  Guys, if you are already in this business, please provide some valuable tips and tickers, so that I can analyze before dumping any. My idea this time is to diversify and target for semi-long term. But idea can change over a period of time :innocent:

This is my portfolio list - BAC (Bank of America), C (Citigroup), CSCO (Cisco Systems), XOM (Exxon Mobil), XRX (Xerox Corp).

Footnote: Whenever I do more research (alpha, beta, gamma analysis :star: ) in stocks, I do lose more!

Another footnote: This investment money is not counted in the asset! Just a gambling

You seem to be rolling in a lot of money, Loto. Wanna help a brother pay off $22,000 in consumer debt? I don't know why I just don't pay it off.

Good stocks: BIDU. I sustained my video gaming habits with profit from BIDU. I'd buy 5 shares. Sell it in few days and make $200 profit. That was good for 4 video games. I miss my investing days. :( I stopped a few years ago to focus on other things. I can't find a proper window to get back in.

Also, for dividend earning GE. Today it's $20.18 a pop. If you can buy 2,500 share at this price, you'd get quarterly earning of $350 or $1,400 a year. Not bad if you have $50,000 just lying there on a checking/saving account. Let say a year later you sell all of your shares and the price is now $25.18. You'd make about $1,4000 on that $50,000. Let's say you keep this money parked in GE for 25 years and the price of stock goes to $60 (judging from 10yr high of $59), at the end of 25th year you'd have $338,891.70. Not to shabby. When you money, making more money is very easy.

Of if you open up a (Indian) restaurant for $50,000, you can expect to make about $20,000 a month. Let's say only $5,000 of it is profit, that's $60K profit a year. In 25 years, you'd have 1,500,000 only in profit. I'm sure you'll do a lot better in some years. Probably expand. You can easily be a millionaire if you have $50,000 to gamble away right now.

If any of you have the dough and lack the willpower to make it work, give it to me. I'll put it to good use. At the end of 25th year, we'll spit it 50-50.

Indigo,

BIDU skyrocketed in the last 2 years, wow! GE is also good for dividends!

Starting an Indian Restaurant is good if one can dedicate his/her time fully, and also in a good location with quality food. I won't be able to do Indian Restaurant business. I had 50% share some time in the past in one Indian Fast food restaurant (Philadelphia) and acted as a sleeping partner, it was a failure and I withdrew my partnership.

Let me now focus in the stock market and I need some good tickers to do some research. I suspect any possible "double-dip recession" could worsen the stock market and general economy little bit, but the possibility is less. What do you think, Indigo?

Indian restaurant was just an idea. Indian foods are not meant to be prepared fast or consumed fast. I've noticed all the fast Indian food places fail miserably. I know an uncle who had one of those food truck going on selling chicken tikka masala and other traditional Indian fairs. It didn't fair well. So he quit shop and came back to work for my dad's restaurant which is somewhat pricey and sit-down place. They are doing well.

Invest on BIDU. It's a fail safe stock. A couple of weeks before the earning calls, buy some shares. Buy 100 if you can afford it. One the day earnings are released, sell that sucker. You can easily make $1000 in matter of days.

Oh, sorry to hear it Malvika :(

But, it was an excellent time (late 2009) when you entered into the stock market. I hope it would still continue. Good luck Malvika!

Yes, as you said, timing the market is highly impossible. Set the profit margin and dump it. Is it worthwhile to look into penny stock since risk is the highest? But return is phenominal if one clicks!

I have already an account with Scottrade, but they charge $7 for trading. When I google, I saw Optionshouse.com who charges only $3.95 per trade and free 100 trades in the first 60 days of a/c open. Anybody has any reviews of this online trader?

Loto,

Exactly, I should have set the profit margin and dump them before the price fell down. Penny stocks are very volatile these days, it's not worthwhile to load them unless you do extensive research and do day trading. BTW, I use zecco and it charges $4 for each trade. I don't have any idea about optionhouse.com though. I hope those stocks will be back in to shape again :(
