Hey there,

I am about to begin the AOS process soon, and I am quite nervous!

Just wondering for all those who filed in the year 2010, could you share your timeline (from when you filed till you received GC) I tried looking at the AOS timeline but it was confusing me. Does it also depend on where you send your application? Am I right that all AOS applications will be sent first to the Dallas Lockbox and then they will transfer it to the right state? In my case, we are in PA so it will be filed in Philly or Pittsburg?

Also, does anyone have any advice, or want to share their experiences in getting a SSN/ civil surgeon/ gathering documents? I want to avoid any RFEs/problems and hopefully this can help a lot of people.

Is the AOS process also experiencing a backlog? I worry because we are going to file sometime in mid-April once we get the marriage certificate, and I want to go to school in September and I am hoping I have the GC then so I can avail of the grants and aids for my SLP program. Also, my fiance is mobilizing for deployment by the end of the year and will deploy around Jan 2012 so I hope all will be settled by then. It's too early to have military orders, although I can send a signed letter from his CO but I doubt it will work.

Hope y'all can give me some insight into this! And thanks in advance!

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Thank you, VJ! smile.png

Dallas I believe is where you send it

You would be better looking at filers groups to find who has filed recently. The timeline comparison doesn't work if people don't select the same filing location or local office.

As a K1 you need to file at chicago. It's all in the instructions. It's also in the AOS thread in my signature. That thread should help you a lot.

Get your SSN 10 days after you arrive but before there are less than 2 weeks left on your SSN. Doesn't matter if it's in your maiden name but at least you have it. Should help with a lot o things, otherwise you'll need to wait till you get your EAD or GC. It isn't needed to file AOS.

Dallas I believe is where you send it

1 million percent wrong. Do NOT file your case as Dallas.

Vanessa and Tony, your link is awesome!

Any ideas on a general timeline though?

Thanks again!

See my timeline below. Timing really depends on where you live, some local offices are fast and some are slow. Sometimes you are transferred without interview to California for processing, which can be slower.

You can check my timeline..we filed Nov 22, 2010....got biometric Jan 10, 2011...No EAD and AP yet still waiting...I got my 2 weeks after my arrival here in US. Im located in New York and we submit the AOS in chicago lockbox. Seeing a civil surgeon depends on the result of your vaccination from St. LUkes....some do have a complete vaccination but in my case its incomplete so I need to see a civil surgeon for completion of vaccination. Many of my friends got RFE due to incomplete medical so make sure if your goin to see a civil surgeon, she fill up the form and return to you with seal. Vaccination depends also on your age. Goodluck for us and another waiting period :(

Uhm.. why do some need interview and some don't? Just wondering. How do they decide this, is it random?

Some say that it's random, some say that it's based on how busy your local office is. I don't think anyone knows for sure.

Most people are transferred to California, but then they're transferred back to their local office for interview.

As for average timeline. Use to be 60 days for EAD, and 90 days for the GC. It's closer to 6 months for GC at the moment though, about 60 days still for EAD. Also depends on whether you get an RFE and how long it takes you to reply.
