Hi all,

I am a permanent resident, and am looking to finally getting my Maryland driving license (we just bought our first car!) I have a United Kingdom driving license, but wasn't sure what the steps are for getting a license here - do I need to start from scratch as if I was a learner driver, or does my existing UK license help in getting a new MD one?

Any help or thoughts you all have would be greatly appreciated - many thanks :)

Many states will simply exchange a DL, and may only have you do a written test.

Check with you state DMV, rules vary by state, because driving privileges are granted by state, not the federal government.

Unless you want to risk that some brainless DMV drone cuts or confiscates your UK license so that you have to deal with this once visiting the Kingdom again, you start from scratch. That means you will have to spend 30 minutes studying the material and drive at about 25% the skill level as a Brit. You can do this with one eye poked out and a knife in you clutch foot. Not worth wasting another thought on this.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

It depends on the state, but I got my Illinois license in November and started from scratch. It's a piece of cake, the whole process didn't take an hour, I didn't study and only got 2 questions wrong. They took me driving but it was easier than I thought it would be. I'm used to driving stick shift, so driving automatic here is way easier.
