Was I understandably cautious or just plain paranoid?

I remember in montreal, a man knocked on our door and asked my mom if he could use our phone because his car broke down, my mom didnt feel comfortable at all and said no. She kinda felt bad about, until she saw him on the news and found out he had been going around trying to get into women's houses to rape them.... better safe than sorry.

When I was a little kid I remember 2 guys outside wanting a drink of water said they were thirsty .. my mom said out the window to use the house .. and they got offended and said they would not drink outta a house and were demanding in the house... My dad came home luckily while the guys were still outside pulled out a giant axe handle he had in his truck and the quickly left.. never to come around again.

you did the right thing jenn. best to be cautious instead of a statistic.

as previously mentioned, the man should not have asked a woman for help. also, men have to be careful nowadays about a woman wanting help. if it's not in plain view i wouldn't help anyone, male or female. never know who is really back there out of sight.......

I think you did the right thing . If you feel uncomfortable for any reason there's no debate, always listen to your stomach. You were polite about it and if the guy was offended , so be it, he obviously doesn't read the press

You were right to be cautious...I probably wouldnt have even talked to the guy....LoL

So I was on my way home from work this evening and I stopped at a convenience store to pick up a few things. A man approached me in the parking lot asking me for a jump. I said no problem, thinking that his was the car right next to mine. He tells me his car is "over there", so I started driving to follow him when I see that he is starting to walk down a fairly long driveway away from the convenience store parking lot. I told him that I didn't feel comfortable following him down the driveway, but he was welcome to use my cables if he could find someone else to give him the jump. He seemed very surprised and rather offended that I did not want to follow him down the driveway. But he managed to find someone else to give him the jump while I waited in the crowded parking lot for him to return my cables. I told him that I hope he didn't take it personally, but a woman needs to be cautious in this day and age.

I started wondering if I did the "normal" thing in this situation. Women, would you have thought twice about following this man to give him a jump? Men, would you be offended if a woman didn't feel comfortable doing so?

Jenn, anytime you follow your 'gut' in a situation like this, you've done the right thing. And any man who will deride you for it either doesn't like women much or doesn't have one in his life that he is close to.

I'm glad you did what you did!

After watching Silence of the Lambs, even I'd be a bit weirded out if some stranger asked for help with his car and was conspicuously out of sight from passersby. I would have kicked him in the nuts and ran like hell...just in case.

I was thinking about Silence of the Lambs too when I first read the post -- I've seen that movie about 9,000 times and I ALWAYS cringe at the part where they girl actually GETS INTO the murderer's van to help him lift the couch in, completely trapping herself. I know I already posted, but not going with that guy was such an excellent move
