We got married in the courthouse in Orlando. It was very nice. We exchanged the same vows that we would have had we gotten married in a church. Of course, I'm sure we probably could have made them more personal in a church. I wore an informal white dress and Javier wore a suit. Since I've been married before, in a church, I have to say, I'm married to Javier just the same as I was married to my first husband. I enjoyed getting married in the courthouse and enjoyed our honeymoon even more since that's were we spent the money that would have been spent on the wedding. I wouldn't go back and change anything about it.

Just couldn't stay my @ss away!

Our plan is to do what a previous poster said about getting a JP to come out and perform it. We'll be doign it in a public park with just my parents and his parents. And then afterwards we figure we'll go out for a nice dinner.

THEN, whenever we're settled and we can plan it together, we are going to have one heck of a vow renewal celebration. All the friends and familiy and alcohol you can stand. :)

One more comment-everyone is talking about money they saved. Don't let that fool you into thinking that a courthouse wedding is free. Ours turned out to be rather expensive, and we still had to scrimp on money for the whole rest of the time. Fee for the permiso to be married...total cost was about $300 including the cost of the permiso itself (more than $200), and the tolls and gas to get to Morelia. The wedding itself was about $100, including the fee we paid at the civil registry, and the fee for the official copy of the marriage certificate.

Ours was $50 + parking. I'm not including the price of a flight to Vegas since we'd have gone anyway.

That's nice, but everyone gets married different places. And depending on where that place is, the price can be considerably higher, particularly if there are other factors involved, which reminds me that I forgot to include the price of the blood test, vaccinations, and placticas...which to be honest I can't even remember.

Edit: I also didn't include the price of the return trip to Morelia that we made in our attempt to get the Apostille for the marriage certificate. I guess because we managed to screw that up and didn't get the Apostille. But all these are things we wouldn't have done had we not gotten married in Mexico.

We didn't get married in our living room to save money. We had a chapel rented, but the visa wasn't delivered in time and we lost that rental fee. We rescheduled everything and using our living room meant we didn't need to try booking another chapel on short notice. Preparing the living room was much more expensive than renting the chapel. We spent around $2000 to do it at home.

Or lower. Depending on location.

Bottom line, folks... do your research. Assume nothing.

For what-going broke? Or for having a sucky wedding? lol...I should add that it goes to reason that a civil wedding in Mexico isn't going to be all that wonderful-it's a requirement for them, just like the blood test is, and for most of them who show up in sweats or jeans, it's just another step in the process, and the church wedding is the main deal.

Colleen, dont feel guilty not one bit. We did the court house wedding and are planning on having our marriage blessed in the church when Niall comes home. We dressed nice but not overly dressed and then went to dinner. I looked at it this way, I still took my vows in front of GOD and he knows we meant them!

Do what feels right for you!

Oh yeah, that's another thing. We had no vows. I have spoken no vows to my husband, and will not until April. It sounds to me like the US courthouse weddings are far better than the Mexico ones!

$300 sounds very reasonable compared to the cost of a church wedding.

My fiance and I are planning to have a very simple courthouse ceremony. No religion, no decorations, no giant white dress. Maybe my family and friends will come. They can if they want. Later we'll have a party at my mom's house.

Thanks.. I will make sure it is. I've already got my vows sort of written (wait till Javier hears he's got to write his own vows...I don't even think he fully comprehends the concept of vows  ). I got inspired to write them after reading a very educational book that my good buddy sent me as a wedding gift. Wanted them to be as real and honest as possible.
