Abstract

BackgroundStriae gravidarum (stretch marks developing during pregnancy) occur in over 50% of women. There is no evidence that any treatment removes striae once they have appeared. Some women are upset about the change in the appearance of their skin.

ObjectivesTo assess the effects of topical treatments in preventing the development of stretch marks.

Search strategyWe searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group's Trials Register (April 2004). We updated this search on 1 October 2009 and added the results to the awaiting classification section.

Selection criteriaRandomised trials comparing active creams with either no treatment or placebo for the treatment of stretch marks in pregnant women.

Data collection and analysisTwo review authors assessed trial quality and extracted data independently.

Main resultsTwo studies, involving 130 women in total, were included.

One study, involving 80 women, indicated that, compared to placebo, massage with a cream (Trofolastin) containing Centella asiatica extract, alpha tocopherol and collagen-elastin hydrolysates was associated with less women developing stretch marks (odds ratio (OR) 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.17 to 0.99). A second study of 50 women compared massage using an ointment (Verum) containing tocopherol, panthenol, hyaluronic acid, elastin and menthol with no treatment. Massage with the ointment was associated with less women developing stretch marks (OR 0.26, 95% CI 0.08 to 0.84)

Authors' conclusionsTrofolastin cream appears to help prevent the development of stretch marks in pregnancy in some women. Verum ointment may be helpful but the trial had no placebo and may show the benefit of massage alone.

[Note: The three citations in the awaiting classification section of the review may alter the conclusions of the review once assessed.]

Plain language summary

Creams for preventing stretch marks in pregnancy

Stretch marks may be prevented in some women by daily massage but it is unclear if any particular ingredients bring special benefit.

Stretch marks are common by the end of pregnancy, occurring in most women. Though they later shrink and fade somewhat, they do not go away. Therefore, any treatment which prevented them would be welcomed by many women. The two papers reviewed may show that any cream massaged onto the abdomen, thighs and breasts (areas most affected by stretch marks) may help a little. There may be additional benefit from certain ingredients in the cream and the ointment described but it is unknown which constituent(s) is beneficial. Neither preparation is widely available.

------------------------

it was 2 tiny studies (130 women total) using a cream not available to the public and this write up sounds like perhaps a university doing drug trials for the drug company... common thing here at OSU. conclusions are author's only, not those of the study participants.

truly, speak to any group of mothers, obgyns, and get the scoop. the cosmetic companies who sell these creams are out to make a buck... i used nothing because my dr told me same as any legit dr will tell you "if your mother had them you will have them, dont waste your money", and i dont have even one. i know two women who look like they were carved up from their chests to almost their knees because even their chests (not just breasts) and arms and thighs got it, though both of them gained HUGE amounts of weight when pregnant too so that probably contributed. if your skin does not have elasticity it will not handle huge weight gains like that.

so anyway, was just trying to dispel the myth perpetuated by drug/cosmetic companies... hate when people get their money ripped off. some nice oil massage is just as nice, less expensive, and benefits the skin after a shower to hold moisture in, as well as continued good diet and exercise during pregnancy is best.

some people treat pregnancy as an excuse to lay around getting fat

I would do Jenna Jameson. Then again, my standards are pretty low and I would do a significant portion of the female population, ages 18-55.

even if they are not in a sheep outfit?

Hey, you wanna do porn, that's great...do your thing...but there should be a stigma that goes along with that.

Why? We have enough stigmas as it is without stigmatizing more people.

I have no problem with JJ and her porn career. She made a living and quite a good one at that doing something that most people on VJ and most Americans watch - porn. The irony is, so many people call her a #######. I don't see her as a ####### - I see her as brilliant. $30 million for her business - she knew what she was doing. She's had sex on film with men and women who have all been tested for HIV/AIDS, STDs, and any other medical condition. How many of you know all that good stuff about all your partners both foreign and domestic? You probably don't. ;)

I also love when people get all self-righteous about having sex for film. BFD! How many guys or gals do you know that have had sex with tons of people??? Lots. JJ was smart - she got paid to put it on celluloid.

But I don't see her as promiscuous. As I stated before, everyone that she's been with is medically tested and wears condoms. That's not promiscuous. That's safe sex. So, just because she gets paid to do it doesn't make it promiscuous. Furthermore, everything that she does or has been involved in is consensual which is the most important thing here. So much pornography is done with sex slaves from Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia that there truly is no comparison between the two.

I have known a helluva lot of people who engage in very risky sexual behavior and that is whorish - but to be calculating, decisive, safe, and financially strategic - that's not being a #######...that's being smart. She made a decision to remove herself from that lifestyle - she made her millions and decided - "I'm good." There is nothing wrong with that. Furthermore, why are people judging her? Until this country stops the production and sale of legally made pornography - which it will never do because there's far too much taxable revenue from it, then we should all back off of a condescending attitude. It's a business plain and simple and our country sanctions it. 'Nuff said.
