Well, I am filling out the G325a for my fiancee, and had a few questions.

1. Under alien #, and US SSN, i'm assuming that since she has none, i put "NONE"?

2. Under the birth date of her parents, i only know the year, but when i try to type in only the year, it puts 01/01/xxxx. is there any way around this? or is 01/01 acceptable?

3. Under employer, is it okay to put the english translation, or does it have to be exactly the name on the paperwork that she has?

4. under the birth place, it lists the village (xa in Vietnamese), do i put that, or do i put the district (huyen in vietnamese) as the city?

5. the place of birth on the birth certificate is different than the place of birth on her family registry (ho khau in Vietnamese). I'm assuming for her I should use the place of birth on the birth certificate? for her parents i used what's on the family registry, is that alright, or do i need to see their birth certificate as well?

1. None or n/a.

2. You should make an effort to get the date for her parents birthday. If you cannot, you can just write these years after you print the document. Be sure to write slowly and carefully and clearly using black ink (since most likely your printer will print the document in black and white.)

3. Yes. You should put the name typed out in English (i.e. transliterated.)

4. Follow conventional Vietnamese addressing scheme. Perhaps a Vietnamese user can chime on this. There are some here.

5. You don't need her parents' birth certificate.

Pro tip: Eventually, when you have to fill the DS230 in many months, you'll be asked for her parent's birthdays or essentially what's on the G325A form. Make sure you keep a copy of this so you can fill out the DS230 exactly like your G325A form.

thanks for the info! the reason i ask about the City of Birth for her is because it only lists the village (xa) under place of birth. I'm not even sure what corresponds to the city level in Vietnam?

I would consider, and seek other opinions, whether you need to submit both a birth certificate and a family registry. I seem to remember I only submitted a family registry to satisfy the "birth certificate" requirement for my wife (Japanese citizen). I do recall they specifically ask for a "birth certificate", but I believe a family registry will work fine. They both have the same information (Date) and conflicting information (City/Village), so if submitting only one is enough, that may be an option.

You said Fiancee so presumably you are doing K1. I did CR1 and therefore filed I130. It turns out there is a "Birth City/Town" box for spouse on I130 but it doesn't require any supporting documentation yet at that point.

In my wife's case, we used "Tokyo" as her city of birth on the I130. When the time came around to submit the later documents, I realized her actual city of birth on the family registry was a small town in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, but the name Tokyo wasn't used anywhere. We had the options of a) translating the family registry birth place as "Tokyo", or b) translating the family registry birth place correctly. I chose b) and then submitted a separate document describing how "Tokyo" isn't technically a city at all, but that many people who live in the Tokyo area consider themselves as "being from Tokyo." It seems that worked (and frankly the Tokyo ambiguity may be somewhat common).

Dan_P, doesn't your fiancee know her parents' birth dates?

no, she doesn't know the birth day&month of her parents, only birth year. apparently, it is a somewhat common thing (or at least not out of the norm) in Vietnam years ago. The family registry lists the day/month/year for her and her brothers/sisters birth, but for her parents, grandparents, it only lists the year. her parents don't even know their date of birth, only year. In Vietnam, everyone goes up an age on Tet (Lunar New Year).

Not so uncommon. My wife's father died when she was a young child, and she does not know the exact day (her mother is also dead, and there are no close living relatives on her father's side)--we'll see how that plays out since we are just filing the I-130 in the next couple of days.
