postoffice returns letter sent by USCIS

So, I've been waiting forever (ok, 6 months) for my wife's i-485 (we got married from K1 visa) app for a green card.

She gets a text message saying there is an update. I check the website and it says the post office returned it as undeliverable. #######?! All previous correspondence has gone through just fine to the exact same address (we never moved!)!!! This includes the NOA a week after we sent the app in…

I called the Post Office and freaked out and also called the USCIS. They said they will try sending again but to not call them for 30 more days if nothing shows up.

Is there anything else I can do? I've never been so pissed at the post office!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly no. All you can do is speak to the post master and ask why it was returned. Double check both names are on the mailbox, and ask them to give you ALL mail and not not deliver something because they think the persons name is wrong.

You can probably put in a complaint too if you like (I've done this twice, lost my wedding photos AND my wedding videos).

Then cross all fingers and toes and hope it all goes okay.

**Edit - out of interest, have you not received even your biometrics appointment letter? In six months?? that's what your timeline indicates so wow... I would be very concerned

I was told at my interview that it is very important that you put your full name on the mailbox for the mailman to read.

Supposedly, they know that when there's a GC in the letter and they do not deliver that letter unless they see the same name as written on the letter by USCIS!

You will have to contact USCIS to resend the GC and make sure you put your name on your mailbox.

Good luck!

It probably depends on where you live. I've lived in the US my entire life, at least half a dozen states and four times as many cities in my adult life. I've never been told I have to put my name on my mailbox by anyone - ever. I've received all sorts of important documents by mail without problems - paychecks, government identification cards, whatever.

I remember someone else having a similar problem, and it turned out they lived in a rural area. The local post office wasn't run by the US Postal Service, and the local postmaster had his own rules for screening mail. If you live in a rural area where the mail is delivered by a subcontractor then you should check with the local postmaster and see what their delivery policies are. If they are screening mail before giving it to the mail carrier then putting your name on your mail box probably won't help. You might need to register the names of residents in your home with the post office.

The policy of the US Postal Service is to deliver mail as addressed, without question, and let the resident decide if the mail should be returned.

12/15/2009 - K1 Visa Interview - APPROVED!

12/29/2009 - Married in Oakland, CA!

08/18/2010 - AOS Interview - APPROVED!

The part I bolded is what i assumed was meant by "put your name on the mailbox"...

Yes we had to register both maiden and married names on our mailbox. Most inconvenient but it must be done in some areas, not all but I would do it to be on the safe side. USPS sent back my biometrics appointment notification for my EAD (that is why it took so long) my maiden name was not registered on our box but some mail did slip through, just not the MOST important stuff!

I complained to the Post Office. My wife currently gets mail with the exact same name (and maiden name) at our address. I've already received mail from the USCIS (our notice of action).

When I called the USCIS after 5 months I was told that the local center was just starting on applicants from April… I called in the beginning of October.

It is really frustrating because I can only talk to stupid asshats on the phone who "open up a trace" (or whatever), give me an ID, and say I can only call back 30 days later if I don't get anything in the mail.

I'm really ready to lose it. These people seem so unbelievably incompetent. (Not to mention the incompetence from the Post Office).

Right now I'm waiting for nothing to show up so I can call again. When I call before waiting the full 30 days they say I have to wait and call later.

BTW, Besides the NOA, we have not received *anything* else from the USCIS.

The only reason I noticed a problem was my wife got a txt message saying there was an update to hour case.

The USCIS website said it was a postage problem.

GAH!

In case anyone is wondering, it takes almost 4 weeks for the USCIS to resend something after the post-office returns it.

Today I finally got something from the USCIS (the resent letter). Have biometrics appointment now.

What a *huge* relief.
