Lately (as in the last year or two) I am seeing more and more people coming to work lugging one of these around:

So I have to ask, WHY? This isn't an airport and you live local. I know it sounds all businessy when you pull it behind you on the parking lot but seriously - it's stupid.

I think people are carrying those things because it is less strain on your body. I read somewhere not long that it takes the strain away from carrying things in your arm or in a briefcase

I would grant that point if you had to use public transit to get to work. There's a lot more standing and walking involved. So it makes sense for the people who work in Manhattan. But I'm talking suburbia here. There is no excuse.

Try carrying a woman's handbag

Just normal everyday wear and tear on the shoulder, usually carrying books, laptops, everything but the kitchen sink.

Lock your books in your closet at work. You don't really need to carry them around.

Lots of people continue working at home after working all day at work, or sometimes they work partly at home and partly at the office. So in these cases needing to bring your laptop, files, books, etc back and forth is a necessity. And the weight of these items can really add up. At the company I used to work at, the distance from the parking lot to my office was a little over half a mile walk, so having to lug all that stuff in a shoulder bag or back pack can be pretty tough on the back!!

I'm a fat lazy ####### and I carry my own stuff. And to address the point raised above, I do work from home a lot.
